I ditched openelec for the wheezy armhf and XBMC images from the pi forums. Works much better. Smooth 1080p playback from streaming unlike the openelec thing. wheezy seems to be the best base OS for XBMC as far as I can tell.

Sadly, I still have a glass tube TV so have to use the analogue audio out. They're still trying to find a solution to the popping noises, but I picked up a HDMI to component and stereo output converter so now I'm getting what I need straight out the HDMI port.
 
How are you guys finding Customs on this? If the online shop wants me to pay $50, will it only cost me $50?

I once ordered Football Shirts from England and once they hit Customs, the price went up by almost 40%.

I only ordered the Raspberry Pi and PSU, can't remember exact cost, but I didn't have to pay extra.
 
I just got the call from a DHL guy ... he says I need to pay about R240 in customs for my order before its delivered? is this right? I have never ordered electronic goods before so hence the question.

Ask them what for. I have a friend that's their company's customs agent and he says there shouldn't be any on it, due to it being tax free or something and other. I got whacked with R150 in duties/tax/whatever (on $35).
You're only like the third guy on MyBB that got whacked with the fees, btw.

That's a new import tax that gets slapped onto imported goods. On the SARS tax guide it's listed under corruption.

I wonder what is the right way to do it? Do you just storm into their offices and demand an explanation?

You can just phone them asking for a breakdown of the price.
What I was advised to do, was to ask for the invoice from customs - it shows the final price. Customs + what you paid Raspberry.org and taxes and everything.
 
DHL sent me an email... its got this as the breakdown.

"
Please note that your shipment travelling under the above air waybill number is pending customs clearance by DHL express. In order for us to proceed with the clearance (according to the attached SAD500), please check the information provided below and make payment for the estimated duties and taxes indicated.

Payment Due
Total Duty and VAT ZAR 148.56
Disbursement Fee ZAR 100.00
Total Due ZAR 248.56
* SARS may impose additional charges for penalties, storage and other customs interventions. An original invoice will follow with the delivery of the shipment

they sent me the SAD form, and the value shows as ZAR 870. I didn't pay that though... i paid ZAR 629.33 via paypal. Knew i shouldn't have added all those extra's and ordered separately.

well hope this serves as a warning for the rest...
 
and on the positive side... i have completed one of my life goals... to serve as a warning to others

That's what they told me too. All I ordered was the Pi. No charger, nothing.
You should phone them and ask for the invoice they got from Customs. The proper price will reflect there.
The R870 is what DHL wants to charge you, minus the R629.

You should have ordered from ModMyPi... Cost R880 for the 2xpi + 2xcase + 2xUSB cable with shipping. Delivered to me in 8 days and NO custom fees :)

I just placed an order from ModMyPi because I heard the delivery is faster. As a bonus, I will be getting the 512mb version that was released recently! And the cost was $3 less than I would have paid on the raspberry shop!
