Rav4 Vs Qashqai

The Mokka (Coffee) X is a class below, so depends how much value you attach to the extra space of the other 2 rivals.

The Ford Firestarter diesel is pretty good, that model is full house as well.

If it helps at all, I own a Renault Kadjar 1.5 DCi EDC

Car looks great.

The interior makes it a really nice place to be.

65l tank can get well over 1000km range on the open road. JHB to George averaged 5.1. In town it is closer to 7.5 but I don't get on the highways at all.

The only thing that "annoys" me is the EDC gearbox. Would've preferred regular automatic but that's personal preference.

Quasqai felt a bit plain compared to it and I got a R80k discount at McCarthy in Woodmead.

Mazda CX-5 doesn't come in diesel but if you're happy with a petrol I would consider it as well.

Those three we're on my shortlist. The RAV4 didn't make it.

What is more important to people nowadays, Auto box or Diesel fuel?
Does it matter if you have a auto box with petrol or Manual Diesel
Best combo would be Auto + Diesel, but just wanted to know how the fuel consumption will be with an auto box using petrol.
Does a Auto use more on petrol on petrol in general?

Depends on the type of auto box, new boxes it would be the same as manual.

Something like CVT or 4-speed torque converter box(still being sold by hyundai and kia) would increase it.

Generally old auto boxes uses more diesel/petrol, where new ones can use less or about the same as an manual.

Depends on car.

Kia and Hyundai still fit old automatic gearboxes to there cars, even the most current ones.

My personal opinion is that ZF-8 speed torque converter gearbox gives you best of both worlds, but they mainly only get fitted on BMW.

The 6-speed autobox fitted in creta and Tucson is also not too bad, only slight increase in fuel consumption. ( nice long warranty to consider)

I heard the EDC boxes gives decent consumption, but feels a bit sluggish and not refined enough yet. Give them a few years then they might be better then.

CVT boxes is sluggish and slow and always seems to "hunt" for gears, it never knows in what gear it need to be in. They also quite noisy, not sure if they better in newer cars.

These days your driving style has a way bigger impact on fuel economy than the type of gearbox.

Diesel is more fuel economic but it's got its downsides. I don't buy cars for fuel economy anyway, I want range.
 
We have the Qashqai with the 1.6 turbo diesel engine since mid 2015. Test drove the 1.2 turbo and it was underpowered esp in the auto guise.

No real issues with the vehicle so far. One issue was the stop/start malfunctioned and this affected some other electronics. The dealer traced this back to the battery being undersized for the vehicle. New larger battery fitted under motorplan and its all good again. The engine is good. Power and torque very good. Very economical as well. Did a few long trips from Dbn to Pretoria and it returned around 4l/100km with normal driving using cruise control most of the way.

Also our vehicle has 19" rims with low profile tyres. Had to replace 2 tyres due to pothole damage but that is more because of the poor condition of local roads.

I am thinking of trading up to the X Trail because it does not cost much more than the Qashqai for a larger vehicle with a bigger diesel engine (2.0)

Ford and VW have Dual clutch autos
Opel has a normal auto box.

Try and get a hold of their brochures and compare fuel consumption figures between the auto and manual.

VW mainly use dual clutch dsg now, with some fitted with tiptronic boxes which is torque convter boxes. Vw and audi uses multiple diffrent boxes for some there range of cars. You can get dsg 6 and 7 etc.

Opel seems to use torque converters mainly from what I can see. The mokka auto box is in house GM made gearbox.

Yes, the volume of the fuel tank.

A car with a 65l tank @ 5.5l/100km is going to get you further than a 50l tank at 5.0l/100km.

EDIT: and don't insult me by calling me an [-]moron[/-] egg head

A 2017 2.0l petrol rav4 or a 2017 qashqai 1.5d techno. The Qashqai is a diesel so lighter on fuel and has more tech on board. The rav4 is a Toyota so I can drive it forever. Price on both cars is the same.

Apparently diesels are more expensive to service so wondering if the added cost negates the fuel saving.

Also from a reliability, maintenance cost and resale value how do they compare? I've heard rumours that the 1.5d engine has issues?
 
Modern day diesel does not cost more to maintain. I drive I high milage turbo diesel and cost cheaper to service the i20 had.

Petrol might hit R16/L soon, rather get the diesel.

The 1.5D is used any manage cars, plenty of parts if something goes wrong.

I think the warranty on Nissan is better, if I'm not mistaken it's 6years
