Billy and Mako Vunipola set to give England Six Nations Grand Slam hopes a boost

England’s hopes of winning a second successive Grand Slam have been given a major boost with the news that Billy and Mako Vunipola are both expected to be fit for what could be the Six Nations decider against Ireland in Dublin.

Prop Mako Vunipola is expected to return from a knee ligament injury against Italy on Feb 26, a game which is likely to see Dylan Hartley omitted from the starting XV in favour of Jamie George for the first time under head coach Eddie Jones, with Owen Farrell set to captain the side.

Jones is considering a number of changes following the 21-16 victory over Wales after confirming he will "experiment" against the Italians as he looks to tune up his side ahead of the games against Scotland and Ireland.

And he will be encouraged by the fact that Saracens No8 Billy Vunipola is now on course to return to fitness in time for that game having initially been ruled out for the entire tournament after suffering a knee cartilage injury in England's Autumn international defeat of Argentina.

“He might get back for Ireland - he’d be pretty useful off the bench, 150kg,” said Jones of Billy Vunipola, who has emerged as one of England's key players under the Australian.

Scotland dealt Six Nations blow after captain Greig Laidlaw is ruled out with ankle-ligament damage

Scotland on Wednesday suffered a major blow with the news that Greig Laidlaw will miss the rest of the Six Nations. A scan undertaken at his club, Gloucester, has confirmed that the Scotland captain sustained ankle-ligament damage in Sunday’s defeat by France in Paris.

Scotland had just fallen behind midway through the first half when Laidlaw tackled centre Rémi Lamerat side-on in midfield and fell awkwardly. The scrum-half tried to carry on but quickly had to be helped to the sidelines. He left the Stade de France on crutches with his right foot in a protective boot.

Laidlaw will find out the full length of his absence when he sees a specialist this week but he will definitely miss Wales’s visit to Murrayfield on Saturday week and the games against England at Twickenham on March 11 and Italy at Murrayfield on March 18. Laidlaw also faces a race to be fit in time for April 19, when Warren Gatland will name the Lions party to tour New Zealand this summer. An astute leader and world-class goalkicker, the Scot has been many pundits’ choice as captain of the midweek team.

Vern Cotter, the Scotland head coach, faces an interesting choice over Laidlaw’s replacement. Ali Price, who came on against France, turned in a sparky performance, markedly increasing the tempo of Scotland’s play and bringing feistiness in the loose. However, the 23-year-old’s leadership skills are not on a par with those of his hugely experienced Glasgow Warriors club-mate, Henry Pyrgos.

Seriously big blow losing Laidlaw. His kicking is at Chris Patterson level and worth a lot of points to us, invariably meaning the difference between keeping us in the game or a drubbing.
 
Scotland playing well. Leading 26-13 and just need to close out the last 10 minutes.

I haven't seen Scotland play with such control and self belief for years. That second half was wonderful to watch.
