Rdio vs Simfy vs Rara vs Deezer in SA

So previously they claimed up to 320kbps. It was certainly not for web streaming, which really just leaves mobile as the major other option, which they now admit was not high quality yet. Wondering what listening methods then were in fact providing up to 320kbps quality. Should be interesting to see how far "up to" will be for which albums.

On the web, you can enable HQ streaming through the options menu on the left hand side of the search bar. That should afaik give you 320kbps. The beta app for android has this option already implemented (not sure though if the full release has it already...). anyone else having problem with the deezer web page? songs are caching VERY slowly. works fine with the android app on the same internet line.
 
I've been using Rdio for quite a few months. Pay R90 subscription for my wife and I, listen through Windows app and Android on mobile.

Tired of Rdio's buggy Android app though.

I'm thinking of moving to Deezer. How is their music collection and do they offer offline music on mobile devices?

All the streaming services offer offline playback. Deezer has the largest catalogue of the bunch.

No idea. I use Simfy because of how cheap it can be. I utilised the hell out of the last promotion they ran and extended my subscription to late 2017 for a fraction of what it would otherwise have cost me.

Same here, i loved Rdio, but the phone app struggles on our EDGE-like connections and for some reason Rdio removed features like Charts/New Releases/News features (or they are hiding it very well) whereas Deezer almost bombards you with "listen to this!" and "we see you like that, try this!" type of things, so i end up discovering more music funny enough.

I just wish i can tell Deezer to not treat me as a South African, they keep defaulting me to random Kwaito / local gospel music because apparently that is what south africans listen to on Deezer /sigh.
 
So I'll give my 2c (or R60) on Simfy vs Rdio. I'll try to be objective, so the same Pro might be listed under both.

What I liked about Simfy:
* Payment methods!
* Extensive music collection

What I disliked about Simfy:
* Website is ugly and unresponsive
* Simfy drinks a lot of Adobe coolaid and relies on Flash and Air too much for my liking
* Searching for obscure artists took a while (as in, I had to wait for it to load)
* While extensive, their music library did not have some artists that I love and listen to regularly.

What I liked about Rdio:
* Elegant and responsive web interface. (Havn't tried it on my phone, but I am sure it will work)
* Had my favorite artists, and their latest releases
* Desktop app and web app can switch seamlessly, control one another and look identical.

Rdio dislikes:
* I wish I could see the current stream quality (Just being a nerd)

Verdict:
For now, I'll stick to Rdio, Simfy is not for me. The music libraries do differ slightly and I suggest anyone to sigh up for both and give them a spin. Both are good products and my con list is simply that which I disliked. They are by no stretch deal breakers.

Simfy definitely needs to improve its website. The service clearly doesn't want its users to use the website at all - it seems to be a courtesy more than anything. You're meant to use the desktop and mobile apps.

How did you like the Rdio mobile app? Have you tried out Deezer?
 
Just a random note: Rdio is the only service that works on the Xbox One right now. No one seems to have an app, so you have to play it via the built-in browser, and Rdio is the only one not using flash (flash apps also not working on xbox) , so it works quite nicely with the snap-in feature .

I have the mobile app, but have not really used it as I spend most of my time listening on my desktop. I will give Deezer a shot next week. I must add that so far the services are very similar and it really is a case of personal preference.
 
I've been using Rdio for a few months and decided to try Deezer. I like Deezer more for their Android app, but I do miss a few things from Rdio:

1. Family discount (pay cheaper to have an account for my wife too instead of having two separate accounts). This way Rdio works out cheaper for me

2. Rdio's FM station, is similar to Deezer's Flow, but Flow plays my favourite songs about 95% of the time with little new music mixed in. In Rdio, they have a slider where I can select my 'appetite' for new music (not favourited), which is useful for discovering new songs

3. Rdio pushes notifications whenever my favourite artists release new albums. Deezer doesn't (i.e. with Mumford and Sons' latest album release)

4. There is no simple way to just "discover" songs similar to your favourite songs. Rdio has Browse and Recommendations

5. Deezer's only Windows app is metro - and no one likes metro :P

Maybe they still getting to know you. Before long, you'll be getting more notifications than you can for.
