I'm reaching out to the myBroadband community, specifically in the Upper Highway area. (This is going to be a bit long. Sorry, but I want to paint a clear picture).
I teach IT at a local high school, and have had a new student join my class. He has done one year of IT already as a boarder at a top private school, but has since moved. This student is dirt poor. He was at the private school on a combination of scholarship, and financial aid. Circumstances changed in such a way that he could no longer attend that school and has moved to us, a government school. This kid doesn't have much at all. He doesn't get food to bring to school, hitch hikes every day the 25km to get to us, and you can see is battling with life.
However, I see great potential in this kid. He has already picked up skills in Java that some second year varsity students don't have. He also has ideas, and in 3 days at school has started working on one. However, the only time he can program is when he is at school. He doesn't have his own computer at home.
He lives in the Camperdown area, and tries to get work every weekend to earn some cash, so he can catch taxis to school, and get some food on the plate. ( He is a white kid, and gets a few looks when he climbs out a taxi at school. Pretentious brats)
I feel that some creativity and talent is being wasted, because he cannot follow up on his ideas at home. I'd like to ask the people in the Upper Highway area for some help here. If you have a reasonable spec (Dual core, 2GB RAM computer) lying around, or even just a few spare parts that I can put together to build him a machine, and you're willing to donate it to what I think is a good cause, it would be fantastic.
Doesn't need Windows, as I can load Ubuntu. The main thing the machine must be able to do is run Netbeans IDE.
So, I'm pleading with you, reach into your hearts, and help me get this kid a machine. Furthermore, if anyone is aware of any IT related work near Camperdown that he can do, it would be awesome. Currently he is doing plastering and painting to get money in.
BTW, this kid is not the type for handouts. I've arranged with him, that if I can get a machine together, he must pay whatever he feels is a fair price. He refuses to accept a freebie. Because it is not my machine to keep the cash, I will then hand the proceeds over to a fund within the school known as the Angel Fund, which is set up to buy food for the kids who have none. We have orphans who live in shacks on their own, and walk to school everyday. Sometimes the only food they get in a day is the lunch from the Angel Fund. If this sounds fair to you, please consider my plea.
If you feel you are in a position to help, please PM me. And if you not in the Highway area, and want to make a cash donation towards it, feel free. I will send all proof that the money was spent on the kid, and not me.
Thanks
