I'm reaching out to the myBroadband community, specifically in the Upper Highway area. (This is going to be a bit long. Sorry, but I want to paint a clear picture).

I teach IT at a local high school, and have had a new student join my class. He has done one year of IT already as a boarder at a top private school, but has since moved. This student is dirt poor. He was at the private school on a combination of scholarship, and financial aid. Circumstances changed in such a way that he could no longer attend that school and has moved to us, a government school. This kid doesn't have much at all. He doesn't get food to bring to school, hitch hikes every day the 25km to get to us, and you can see is battling with life.

However, I see great potential in this kid. He has already picked up skills in Java that some second year varsity students don't have. He also has ideas, and in 3 days at school has started working on one. However, the only time he can program is when he is at school. He doesn't have his own computer at home.

He lives in the Camperdown area, and tries to get work every weekend to earn some cash, so he can catch taxis to school, and get some food on the plate. ( He is a white kid, and gets a few looks when he climbs out a taxi at school. Pretentious brats)

I feel that some creativity and talent is being wasted, because he cannot follow up on his ideas at home. I'd like to ask the people in the Upper Highway area for some help here. If you have a reasonable spec (Dual core, 2GB RAM computer) lying around, or even just a few spare parts that I can put together to build him a machine, and you're willing to donate it to what I think is a good cause, it would be fantastic.

Doesn't need Windows, as I can load Ubuntu. The main thing the machine must be able to do is run Netbeans IDE.

So, I'm pleading with you, reach into your hearts, and help me get this kid a machine. Furthermore, if anyone is aware of any IT related work near Camperdown that he can do, it would be awesome. Currently he is doing plastering and painting to get money in.

BTW, this kid is not the type for handouts. I've arranged with him, that if I can get a machine together, he must pay whatever he feels is a fair price. He refuses to accept a freebie. Because it is not my machine to keep the cash, I will then hand the proceeds over to a fund within the school known as the Angel Fund, which is set up to buy food for the kids who have none. We have orphans who live in shacks on their own, and walk to school everyday. Sometimes the only food they get in a day is the lunch from the Angel Fund. If this sounds fair to you, please consider my plea.

If you feel you are in a position to help, please PM me. And if you not in the Highway area, and want to make a cash donation towards it, feel free. I will send all proof that the money was spent on the kid, and not me.

Thanks
GB

So you're looking for a donated PC so that the kid can learn programming?

Add a summary at the top - its too much text.

I've got an old PC that's not being used. It is rather old. Can't remember the specs, but it works, runs windows just fine, has 2gb ram iirc. The issue is that the side cover is missing, so it's wide open. It's definitely not first prize, but if nobody else can help out then I'd happily send it his way...

Here are some pics of the machine. As you can see it is missing that side cover, is dirty as hell as it's been sitting in a cupboard, and needs a little tlc. The hard drives will be removed, but I will try to leave one in for an operating system. It does have an xp license serial on the side of the machine. I'm also based in JHB but know people going back and forth to Durbs if you can wait a week?

If you want the machine and feel it needs some upgrades to get it to the required standard for this kid then find out the costs to do so and I will see if I can help. I'm not promising anything here, but I will consider it...

To DJ and Phoenix. You guys are fantastic. DJ, I'm sure that pc will be fine. Sides aren't that important in this case. I'm sure that with his skills he will make a plan. It's a great start. I can't ask more than that of you. I'll pm you tomorrow to talk further. Cheers

I've got a beat up old IBM Thinkpad T42 laptop - it's got 1gig of RAM and runs ubuntu fine. Needs to be used with an external keyboard though and I'm in CT so there will be shipping.

No problem at all. I'm sure considering the state and age of my PC that others might be better options, but if you'd like a PC for your class that you guys can use to mess about with, and for you to teach with (i.e. break the thing and fix it or whatever you think appropriate) then let me know and I'll send this one down. Or just keep it in case another kid like the one you mentioned comes along.

I'd love to see it go towards teaching kids...

DJ, you're flipping fantastic. I hope people tell you that regularly. I would love it. If the machine isn't quite there, I can definitely still use for teaching purposes.

Consider it yours, and don't mention it. It's only a pleasure to see it going to good use.

PM me your details and I'll arrange to have it sent down to Durbs next week/end. You'll just have to arrange to collect it from Umhlanga...

Why not Raspberry Pi?

~R500 plus screen/keyboard and would give tools to write code immediately

~2k in total depending on HDMI display screen prices
Cheaper to grab someone's old box & Rpi adds complexity/weirdness factor for noob.

also...props dj

Forgot about that - OP, I'll happily send you one if you think that you might use it as part of your teaching efforts.

PM me your details and I'll send it your way.

The PI doesn't allow us to run netbeans which is the stipulated ide for the new syllabus and Java. Just not powerful enough. They need the ide as well as the gui to use derby. I thought about that. Tried an install. Netbeans ran, but took about half an hour to start up, and took forever to compile a single J Frame project.

Ah okay then.

I always thought the Pi was intended as a teaching tool?
