Ready for Telkom

well, neotel would be hot on telkom's heels if they discovered a nifty invention called an ethernet cable...

haha. telkom has never been 'hot on the heels' of anyone.

Maybe they will wake up now and bring out the ethernet cable thingy hahah

Hence the importance of speaking to clients about their needs.

Really?

How come have I never seen a survey then?

We need an ethernet device, a month to month option, stable pings and the ability to surf and talk simultaneously.

There are our needs.

Neotel make it happen.

Everytime these losers open their mouths, it is to explain to us how things work, always concentrating on meaningless terms like "next generation converged services." Otherwise they tell you what they are planning to do or what 'real broadband' is. The point is they are failing to offer good consumer products that the consumer market is asking for. South Africa has around 70% prepaid users who want decent internet. What do they offer? Uncapped internet for R1 000-00 on cdma tied to a 24-month contract! And the coverage is crap. That is utter rubbish, because we have seen it all before with Sentech and WBS. Just because someone fills the news pages with hot air regularly does not mean that he is different.

What I really do not understand, is why Vodacom does not just reduce their per gig prices by say 25% to 35%-50%. This will completely bury the so-called competition and this Neotel nonsense will no longer mean anything to anyone. Currently on a 2GB prepaid, the price is roughly R195-00 per gig. Say it was to become R100, it would negate any advantage by fixed line operators, apart from latency issues. And they have the capacity and the high speed, as well as the flexibility of prepaid. It would be interesting to see the likes of Telkom and Neotel try to play catch-up. According to me, they would not really catch up. At the end of the day, Neotel would just become an operator of the Seacom cable.

To get back to the point: I am really sick and tired of hearing Neotel nonsense! Give us proper internet without all the ridiculous terms and conditions and you will have something to talk about. As long as you insist on a 24-month contract, then you will only have 300 subscribers.
(I know that Neotel fans will be eager to regurgitate the same explanations that Neotel is fond of, but I have heard it all before. Thanks)

This has been debated ad nauseum, Vodacom can't keep up with the demand. Their HSDPA is the equivalent to dial-up at some times. Why? Because Telkom and Neotel can't offer them enough bandwidth.

Maybe then people should check their coverage. Nonetheless I understand what you are saying. However, you don't mention anything about the fact that Vodacom is building its own national fibre network or the fact that the upload speeds of hsupa are now 1.4mbps (soon to go to 5 mbps),which opens new world of possibilities for peer-to-peer. I also believe that South African internet users are smart enough to know that if they can upload at decent speeds, then they can host some of the information that is currently hosted overseas, without having to use traditional hosting companies. This will actually lead to a case where a call originates and terminates on the same network. In the case of Vodacom, this means, not having to rely on either Telkom or Neotel for any bandwidth. This is all I am going to say. Thanks.

If I mentioned HSDPA, it's because I had HSDPA coverage... Yes, Vodacom is building their own local network. Operative word being local... they don't have some magical wireless link to international bandwidth.

I know, silly question: has anyone in Capetown got any news on Neotel "launching"?

Probably will only hear form them in 100 days

I just hope that Neotel also realizes that the reason that some people only subscribe to one service is because they ONLY WANT one service and not a converged solution with 9 things that I don't want because i DONT USE it.
