Real names and real problems

Meh, it's fine if they close down my g+ account. I've made all of 2 posts in it I think.

People should be allowed to use whatever name they want to instead of their real name.

G+ will be a stalker's paradise.

Yep, no different from Facebook. Never had any problems there.

Don't put anything onto the internet you don't want made public.

All those words... yet not a single thought as to why google wants you to use your real name?

I wonder if ads targeted at you in person are a lot more valuable than those targeted at people who may happen to behave similar to you?

If google knows who you really are on plus...they know who you really are on gmail, blogger, money etc.

How will you feel when the google ads on random websites welcome you by name?

Think its a great idea and worth the expense. You'll find that most users want privacy and that is worth all the expense in the world.

I think it's totally reasonable of Google+ to ask that one uses their real name.

I would happily belong to a "real" social network that is not commercially driven. And I would pay for the privilege of knowing that the people who have joined me on the network are the quality of people who are prepared to pay for the use of something that isn't besieged by spammers and kooks.

Alas, I am but a single rational voice in a largely irrational world.

Why do people want 'real' name social networks? Don't they have a life in the 'real' world at home? Go outside and make friends with your neighbours or is that to much effort or do they like to hide behind a screen and keyboard.

You're saying people who use their real names are hiding behind their computers? It's the other way around mate ;)

People who use pseudonyms in communities where one typically use a real name, are hiding behind their computers (unless they have a good reason for doing so).

Haha good point. I use services like Facebook to keep in touch with real people who are my 'friends' and 'acquaintances' in real life.

OMG NOT TEH EVIL ADVERTS!!!!!!!

Seriously, can anyone explain this fear of Google etc showing targeted adverts instead of random ones. I actually find them useful
The only danger I can think of would be for someone that can't control their spending

I don't get it either. The fear of targeted ads is just irrational. It's normally the tin-foil-hat crowd who can't let this one go.

I see they have blocked Violet Blue. If they want to apply this same name verification algorithms to citizens of SA, Google+ will definitely run into all sorts of problems. Have you noted the peculiar English/European names some of our fellow South Africans have?

You are missing the point. I don't use facebook to pick up chicks or go out. I use it to contact my friends etc eg arrange a get together at last minute (becos calling waste of time as their phones might be off). Social networking is (currently) an extension of our "real" social lives.

Sheesh, drives me nuts. Just because my sister asked me to look up something on her car doesn't mean that is one of my interests, but now Google thinks it is and changes my results for searches accordingly. Pffft.

I prefer to be able to control that myself, if I want a local search, let me choose it and so forth.

That is a great idea! If they just make it cheap like even US$5 a year, they will be thwarting spammers, bots, trolls, etc. Regardless of whether they allow pseudonyms or not.
Either way, I myself dont add people I dont know, so if sexychic123 or whomever wants to add me on google+, too bad - I'm not interested in obvious spammers.

KEEPIN IT REAL

If we all used our real names we wouldn't have stalkers because they would actually be held accountable. I would have to change the way I rant though!

People won't even pay $2 for whatsapp, I doubt they will want to pay $5 for any other service that they previously had free.
