Is anyone else experiencing this? I've had TERRIBLE latency (between 1200ms and 1800ms+) since just before Christmas. It fluctuates the whole time and last night I was stuck on 1400ms for quite some time.

The funny thing is that there is someone else in the house that plays as well, and their's as between 900ms and 1100ms on the SAME connection!?

I haven't changed anything on my PC or connection settings.

Any ideas, please? I neeeed my fiiiiix!

I have also noticed this

I have two accounts with web Africa a shaped and unshaped, on my shaped account I normally got around 600 – 700ms or so, but I have noticed that lately its never drops below 900ms and average 1300ms. But on my unshaped I am getting the best latency I have ever had 300-400ms, I had 3 people playing wow on my line all getting below 400ms. So I really suggest just getting a unshaped account

I get the blame - but it is not me.

We have the same problem.
Not that I play these games, but my son and nephew play every day and for the last week or more I just hear complaints from their direction that the games have been virtually unplayable.

To analyse. I am using 384kb ADSL and the service over the last year has degraded. It is certainly not what it used to be??

1. I doubt this is a WebAfrica's fault, but perhaps their support people could comment on the phenomena of low latency over this festive season?
2. Telkom too if they wouldn't mind explaining what is going on.

Hi granttwee.
Yes that would resolve the problem, but not all the members of MyADSL or the public can afford R500 for 4Gb of unshaped data, especially since there was little or no issues with the shaped accounts before?

BTTB, that's the thing, yeh. It's been fine all of this time, even with three players on it and a fourth person surfing the 'net. It's only for the last week or two that it has been giving hassles.

It's very annoying :(((

I agree 100% so this is what I have done a 1 gig unshaped account from web africa is R.125, for me 1 gig just for world of warcraft per month is enough. If I need to download or do other work on the internet I switch to my R.75 per gig shaped account, I know this is very impractical but it’s worked out cheaper for me

That would have worked if our household's internet behaviour was that easy :)

We have four people in the house: Three playing WoW and one surfing the net. Sometimes one of the three WoW players doesn't feel like playing and they surf or chat. Sometimes only one of us feels like playing WoW.

It's terrible!! Why can't my life just be easy!? :D

@Yak and Grant.

Nevertheless I think both the ISP and Telkom should give some explanations.

For a moment I am thinking the shaped service has been degraded to force gamers/online traders to purchase unshaped accounts?

One doesn't want to surmise, but unless there is a bad international link, the shaped accounts over the last year or more on a graph have been moving from the top left to the bottom right.
During the day ADSL is up to maggots and the situation doesn't appear as if it is going to get better?
Telkom are going to employ third party companies to help with the backlog of ADSL installations I read somewhere. This will probably only escalate the problem?
My hope is that Neotel will help normalise the situation.
I am damned if I am going to fork out more than what I am already paying for ADSL a month, just to get the service I had a year ago.

Gawd I hate the Telecom situation in this country. It is so lethargic, mundane, more is nog n dag, "best" effort service etc etc etc.

BTTB, I couldn't agree with you more! It's ridiculous that they can provide such a pathetic "service" and get away with it.

grant, yeh... but I like fun! :D

Its ridiculous my ping is well over 4000 and it is completely unplayable. When will it go back to normal? The cable break in the east is no excuse for a connection to Europe being this pathetic.

Going Nuts here. Today has been totaly unplayable :( Not that its been playable since xmas anyway. The question is, is it the ''line break'' or are we just getting screwed? and if its the line break then why are the unshaped ones not affected at all.

I've been using a 10 day trial since the 27th and today has been the worst day. Took me about 5 minutes to connect and then my latency didn't drop below 1000ms (usually sits at around 300-600)

Maybe the unshaped accounts are prioritised and its now just more apparent because of the problems with the line break?

Or maybe the contention ratios have gone up as telkom signs up more and more subscribers, its something quite typical of them. More subscribers bunched on 1 line as opposed to upgrading their 'service'.

exchange server might be the problem.??

i was speaking to me m8 and he also has the same problem, seems that all or most SA connections are having some probs.

a couple months ago Blizzard EU changed there servers...from telia to someone else or the other way around cant remember BUT when they did this it caused some problems with not only just SA but all across the board.

before they did this my ping was always below 400 even on ISDN but ever since the change the ping was above 600-800 on ADSL

me, ill be waiting for AOC :p

I havent had any noticable change...500-600ms but then again im on the US servers;)
