So apparently to activate roaming with Vodacom I now need to pay a R5k deposit, even though I had roaming active for years with Nashua before porting to Vodacom SP.

No explanation as to why. Is this really standard policy? I don't have the energy to deal with this stupidity.

Odd, I have roaming active for when I travel up into Africa and it did not cost me a cent other than the calls / texts I made.

That's what I was expecting and what I've always done before, with Vodacom and MTN contracts. Although never with Vodacom SP directly who seem to be special.

Vodacom charge that deposit if your contract is less than either 3 or 5 years old (can't remember which one) I think went through this about 2 years ago

Yes..this is a policy that have always been there for new customers. It is to act as a buffer should the client run up a large bill. If I remember correctly, if your account is 6 months or older and have a good history with Vodacom, then they will in most cases void the deposit.

My colleague was very keen to port to Vodacom (having been with MTN for years) and this was the reason he didn't.

The stupid thing is I've had this Vodacom contract for more than 5 years, albeit mostly with a different SP and I have a perfect history.

So Vodacom will give me a new iPhone on contract without even needing to see a bank statement or proof of income but I must pay a deposit to roam?

It is with your SP that you have a history...not the network. Your history is with Nashua when it comes to billing...not Vodacom. How old is your account now with Vodacom themselves?

No. If you ported from Nashua to Vodacom SP (now known only as Vodacom) and you did not have a existing account with us, then bank statements and proof of income and proof of address would have been required. If this was not requested from you it would mean one of two things...either the consultant did not do his/her job correctly or you have a existing account with us...in which case it might be possible to void the R5000.00 deposit.

Either way you're essentially penalizing customers for joining you. If I move to another bank they don't say your credit limit is 0 because you don't have a history with us.

About 5 months now I think.

Then apparently Vodacom Direct didn't do their jobs. All they asked for was proof of residence, apparently the system didn't require anything else?

Chances of you running up a R30 000.00 bill when taking your bank card with your overseas is not high. PM me your number and I will see if I can smooth talk our help desk.
