Reapplying CPU Thermal Paste

Maybe I dont use stock coolers???

Still, you've never even looked at one? Not even a picture?

doobyscoo is right, few get removed, but the arrows are there because that's the only reason you need to turn the things, to remove them. If you just click it in place and leave it, it's fine.

BTW some aftermarket coolers come with exactly the same clips, like the Coolermaster Hyper TX3.

Contrary to popular belief, I dont spend all my time drooling over PC parts :p So no, dont recall seeing anything of the sort. And I also say its not a decent after market cooler if it doesnt come with proper screws :p

Haha so for all you know the stock 1155 cooler could be great, and you'd never even know it. (It isn't, dear lord it isn't, but it might have been and you'd never know) :D

By the way, OP, how did you exchange your board, I want to take mine in as well, but the shop still doesn't have new stock. I've heard you can take them directly to ASUS? How does that work?

I bought the board from Rebeltech, when they received the new boards they emailed me to tell me I can bring mine in...So I packed it up, drove there and gave the guy my board and he handed me a nice new 1 :) Can definitely recommend Rebeltech from my past few experiences with them.

Thanks, only problem is I didn't buy from them. I've wanted to in the past, but they're in Sandton, which is a bit far from me to go and collect stuff in the week, and I don't want to go through the schlep with a courier.. I need to know how to exchange it at ASUS directly, there's some kind of document on their website but when you open it, it's in Moon Man Language, no matter what language you have selected.

Why not just contact the people you got the board from and ask them?

I did, they keep telling me they don't know when the new stock will come. I think they're just delaying till the recall period is over and everyone is stuck with the boards.. They told me they'd have it by the first week in April. Everyone else does....

Call them?

Name the shop?

I have the same board just with a 2500(non-k) and my temps are very similar to yours. Idle +-32 Load +-60 even after reseating. I never really worried too much as it seems pretty much toward the upper end of normal which is what I have come to expect in South Africa.

I will post my results once I get my Hyper 212 plus and some decent thermal paste.

Hi TJ

Did you buy the board from Prophecy? If you did, I apologise for the delay - it has taken us longer to get replacement boards than we expected. I can assure you a few things though from Prophecy's side (assuming you bought the board from us!):

1. There is no "end of the recall period" - up until the last day of your warranty, if you still had a B2 board, we would swap it to a B3 board.
2. Stock has been very intermittent coming in, and we have already received boards and swapped for customers - but we haven't received every different type of board we purchased, and we haven't received enough of each board to help every customer - we sold a lot of Sandybridge systems!
3. If you are concerned / worried that we won't sort you out, call us, ask for Paul, and I'll arrange a credit for you.

Hope that helps! In terms of swapping directly from Asus, call them and they will help you out.

Regards,
Paul Johnston

Thanks, would appreciate that as that was the cooler I looked at originally for this build but then once i had set it up the temps were low enough that I didn't really need it. If reapplying the paste doesn't work for me then I might just end up going that route. Not that 60 is horrible, I'd just rather not have my motherboard complain to me every time the CPU gets there :p

K so I used Meths + Earbud to remove the old paste from both CPU and Cooler, applied a small blob in the centre of the centre and then just rested the fan on top for a bit for a few seconds to spread it out and then clipped it all in and the results are strange :/

Idle: Around 33-35 (so about the same)
Crysis 2: 55 (so that came down a bit)
Prime 95 (heat test): Was past 68 and I decided to stop it >.<

So what do you guys rate, did I not do it properly or do I just accept these are normal temps & get me a hyper 212? :)

well sounds like you did it right, and those temps aren't that bad at all granted mine are a little cooler at 4GHz but I got water cooling :p

Wipe off cpu with kitchen towel, blow dust away, place tiny amount in center of cpu, spread it out, replace heatsink.

I know that I had a prob with temp and it just happened that the fan was stuck due to one of the wires around it. So maybe heck that!

the reason why many people advocate using a tiny amount in the middle and letting the heat sink do the work is:
1) This allows the thermal paste to fill gaps where the HS and CPU don't touch (thermal paste is less conductive than the metal)
2) The actual chip is located in the centre of the CPU, if you've never seen it then: http://www.legitreviews.com/article/402/2/

if you've got a perfect lap, you really don't need any thermal past as there should be almost 100% contact between the HS and CPU. Now this is of course damn near impossible, so a minute amount should be used and preferably something like liquid pro http://www.coollaboratory.com/en/products/liquid-pro/

So I ran a full test with Prime95 running to see what it would max out at, in the end it didn't even go past 70 with Prim95 set to generate maximum heat. I think what'll do is just get the Hyper 212+ anyway cause it's really not that expensive & then that'll at least be a lil future proofing if I ever decide that 4.0Ghz mark is looking attractive :p Thanks for the help guys. It would be interesting though to see actual results from using either just the dot or actually spreading the paste.

Thanks a lot, but no, I didn't buy it from Prophecy. Although I'm definitely considering it in future. I just hate dealing with couriers. So. Much.

It's another online store, here in Pretoria. They've been great up to now, but I don't know what's causing the issue with these boards now, surely they imported enough of them? And why only Asus boards?
Asus does say on their website they only do exchanges up to the end of May, I think. I'm just anxious to get the thing exchanged since I use 6 of the 8 SATA ports permanently and one as an e-sata. It's a P8P67 EVO and IMO a bit over 2 grand for a motherboard is a hell of a lot of money so I want it to be perfect.

I'll try phoning them tomorrow, maybe I can get off work early and go swap it...

Here's their official exchange information though, just to see what I mean: http://vip.asus.com/eservice/changeSandybridge_MB.aspx

I'm confident it won't be a problem - Asus South Africa will be legally obliged to swap out the board for you, even after the "exchange period".

The reason limited stock has been coming in is because it's a hugely popular platform (LGA 1155) that has had major supply constraints because of the B2 problems.

The other thing to remember is that if your board does fail, it would likely happen in the 3 year warranty period - so overall the risk is pretty low, imo. But definitely phone Asus and they will sort you out!
