During working hours I will do stuff with the boss... granted!
After hours I have as little contact as possible with work, that applies from 5PM on Friday afternoon through to 8AM on the following Monday morning...

Back on topic...
I am considering asking for a raise, considering they are more willing to pay a contractor 4x what I get but they want to keep me down.

Sucks for you man. I have a great relationship with my boss and often grab dinner or drinks with him and the other chiefs... It's also helped with promotions and raises in the sly haha.

Its called having boundaries... Most books dealing with psychology explain this quite a bit.
After hours, its time spent with my wife and child. My wife does not take too kindly to "drinks after work" and stuff like that because it means less family time.

I respect your opinion. However, life is all about balance right? Have dinner/drinks once a month or every quarter even can't be considered as detrimental to your marriage...

Maybe thats why they get the good increases? lol

Do any programmers go out of their way to develop systems to improve business when not asked to do so?
The way the KPI's are setup in our company is unfair because the targets are too high and you will never reach them if you do your job 100%.You need to do 150%, so that is what im trying to do now.Effen sucks.

That is special engineering to ensure the owners/shareholders get to ride on the gravy train.

Is the other 50% your own initiatives?
I believe that if you reach 100%(3.5 rating), and you get that the next year as well then you basically reached your glass ceiling.

I am considering asking for a raise, considering they are more willing to pay a contractor 4x what I get but they want to keep me down.

I asked my one employer for a 20% increase as I was sliding into debt. I told them that I had to bring my salary in line with industry standards and was prepared to accept a little bit less due to the convenience of working for them (location).

I thought I was being underpaid by 30% when they said "No!" and I had to move on. I even got the reply that they could easily afford to replace me with juniors.

So I moved on only to discover I was seriously underpaid, I now earn triple that salary.

Oh, they also forgot that when they employed me my position was that of a junior's but I built it up over the years to that of a senior and they ended up filling the position with 3 staff costing them a few randts more than the 20% I wanted.

Thats not unusual for companies these days.. they forget about the concept of "Domain Knowledge" and also the experience that might have been gained over the period working in the position.

Thanks for the story - I must say I really appreciate it. This is a classic scenario and all too common in SA. Well done for moving on and getting whats market related for your craft.
