Recharging a laptop battery BS

Is it true that you have to charge the battery for 16 hours when you charge it for the first time. A friend went to Incredible Connection and they told him that if there is load shedding and the battery doesn't get 16 hours non stop charging he is screwed. Something about it working something out on the first charge.

I think that it is BS. I have never charged any of my phones, mp3 players and laptops for 16 hours the first time and I have always got cool battery life.

I reckon that it is more NB to discharge completely and then recharge for the first three times that you use the battery. That is what all the device manufacturers recommend in their manuals.

Any thoughts on this?
 
Bwhaaaaaaaaaaaaahaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahaaa - :D some people confuse the urban legends created with NiCD batterys were the norm.

Charging lithium-ion batteries (BU12)

Lithium-ion is a very clean system and does not need priming as nickel-based batteries do. The 1st charge is no different to the 5th or the 50th charge. Stickers instructing to charge the battery for 8 hours or more for the first time may be a leftover from the nickel battery days.

I thought that it was bull. Those guys suck so much. He is too afraid to plug it in now because there might be load shedding. Well done Incredible :-/

Apparently you are not supposed to completely discharge a lithium ion battery. if you completely discharge them then they can no longer be recharged. but most modern batteries have a special protection circuit in them that disconnects the battery if the level gets to low.
