So far my one mate has gone through 2x Seagate and 2x Hitachi drives in two of his laptops. All the times it was bad sectors or physical damage. Notebooks do not travel or get used on bed/lap, only on dining room table.

What other brands do you guys recommend?

Try something like Core Temp to see what his temps are.
Maybe worth checking if he shut's the notebook down properly or just turns them off on the power switch.

Well an SSD would obviously remove the heating problem and the moving parts problem. Might be expensive though.

I'd take this though for reasonable priciness:

The 5 year limited warranty sounds good too. Don't know what the "limited" conditions are though.

Get an SSD to hold the OS and most of your programs, then get a monster external drive (you get nice sleek looking ones nowadays :) ) for all media :).

It's also safer option because if your pc crashed ----> media is saved ;).

+1 for the seagate momentus xt, got one for one of the managers here and he is happy with the speed increase.

Another +1 for the Momentus. I've got one in my laptop and it's very snappy.

Sorry, seagate lost the battle. Ended up getting a Samsung.

If he's cooked 2 HDD's per laptop & its over a short period of time i don't see any HDD being any differant,he's going to end up with a domino set of HDD's till he looks at why its happening.
Monitoring temps to see what they are would be a good starting point.

Agree with Tun@, there's a reason the drives are dying so quickly. Are they just dead, or clicking etc? If they just die (don't even spin up) then perhaps the laptop's SATA power is suspect and killing the PCBs. I would measure the voltages on the SATA power connector. He should use a multimeter and check to see if the readings are ok. Check here for the pinouts: http://www.allpinouts.org/index.php/Serial_ATA_(SATA,_Serial_Advanced_Technology_Attachment)

Read the first post again.

It's NOT a heat issue.

His laptop does NOT travel. It does NOT get abused or dropped etc. It only gets used on a dining room table so ventilation is good. If he maybe uses it 1hr a day it's a lot. He does not game or use intensive apps. He only uses it for email and typing the odd document.

Anyway, this time round we are going with Samsung. The Seagate that went for warranty will be replaced with something that will end up in a external enclosure used for backups.

Next time round I'm forcing him to buy a SSD.

I just reckon he has bad luck. I do the odd data recovery job in my spare time so I know a bit about hard drives but logic escapes explaining his situation.

This has happened over two different laptops, just to add to the story.

In that case, either he's cursed :) or he's done something that he is unaware of that is damaging the drives. "Bad sectors or physical damage": perhaps the dog knocks the bag over when it goes out to pee at night? Anything is possible, and hard to figure out without seeing how he works and handles the laptop in every aspect. Perhaps he stores the laptop in its bag next to a big speaker and the magnet wrecks the drive. I've never heard of a person have that many drives fail in that short a time in 2 different laptops. Bizarre, but I'm sure there's an explanation to be found somewhere.

Forcing him to get an SSD next time should mitigate any further problems :)

Nah, he does not own any form of pets and does not have big speakers. I've seen him many times using his laptop and nothing out of the ordinary. I've racked my brain around this so many times trying to find a explanation (and I'm a logical level headed person) but I just don't see it. I've come to the conclusion that he just curses hard drives and that's where it ends as I can find no other explanation.

The only positive thing is that I have 6yrs worth of backups from his drives so I'm kinda like a guardian angel. Restoring mail is a biatch though.
