Recommend a reliable auto hatch (R100k)

To throw a spanner in the works, she's started taking a liking to bigger cars.
I would not mind that at all as long as it's a 4x4 and not FWD.
We've often had to borrow a car in winter for trips to Ceres to see the snow.

my polo had a twincharged motor and had to also do the pistons at 70 000kms. luckily i had warranty.
sold that car the minute it hit 100 000kms

But why then is maintenance on an Audi so much more than a VW?

It cost me R18 000 to extend the comprehensive motorplan at VW by 2 years or 30 000kms. That was on the polo gti.

Audi quoted my wife R30 000kms for 1 year for her A1 1.4 T (which is a cheaper and technically simpler motor than the gti)
