Recommend a reliable auto hatch (R100k)

Wow, my friend's 2014 A3 (around 70 000km's) had turbo replaced at 30 000, mechatronix at 60 000 and head and pistons last week.... what's up with some of these A3's!

That's actually from two highly recommended RMI approved places.
Even more from the dealership.

The 6-speed mechatronics unit apparently costs a lot less than the 7-speed which I have

yep, definately. as much as i really like VAG products, in terms of comfort, build etc... I would never recommend it as an affordable option to be owned outside warranty. rather go japanese or korean. Hell even my renault is more reliable

People will accept all the trouble from a car, as long as it's a German brand.

I must admit that even though this issue is going to end up costing me quite a bit even after my warranty pays out, my next car will most likely be another German brand.

I've actually owned Japanese and Korean brands but ended up back where I started...

I totally get this. I had a polo gti with issues, wife had an A1 which was decent. I have a renault now, but she has a Tiguan. I reckon there will always be a VAG car in our household.
 
So I've run all the options by my wife and we've driven in all of these cars besides the Civic.

i10 Grand - Would be the first choice but need to find one for under R140k

i20 - Definitely will go for this if I find an auto in decent condition

Picanto - Wife loves it but the boot is tiny

Honda Civic - Wife does not like

VW Up! - Wife does not like

Honda Jazz - Wife does not like

Polo 6c - Wife loves it but would cost too much
