I don't seem to be having any luck at all with my selection ISPs.

  • I was using Telkom, but their pitiful soft cap had my service throttled into the ground for 3 weeks of every month.
  • Then I moved to Axxess who couldn't provide a quality of service that I found to be acceptable - the connection was just slow and despite multiple tickets to resolve the issue, it never seemed to go away.
  • Then I moved to MWeb which was definitely decent and I was happy with them, but I saw and took what looked like a better offer
  • So I moved to OpenWeb (upgraded from 4mbps to 10mbps) who shaped my connection bad enough as to be harmful to my small business during daylight hours
  • Lastly, I've moved now to Nexus and while I'm happy with the service, I'm very disappointed with pretty much everything else, especially their billing policies.

Nexus flat out insists on debit order or credit card payment and won't accept EFT unless such payment is made before the 25th of each month. They recommended I basically pay double for 1 month in order to put my account in a credit and then I'm always just paying to "refresh" that credit but this doesn't work for me as I couldn't possibly manage a double payment at this time. Neither do debit order or credit card debits but that leaves me all without any options.

My situation currently is that due to unforeseen circumstances, I'm unable to satisfy the debit order payment, but I can pay R300 in time for the debit order and then I can make up the extra R200 afterwards. Nexus has informed me that they can't help me in any way at all and that I'm just going to have to sit and watch the debit order bounce at which point, the bank will nail me for the bounce and Nexus will also charge me 5% or R50 (whichever is larger) for ... reasons?

In light of this, I'm looking for another ISP (again) who might be more willing to help me continue to use their service.

Here are my requirements:

  • 4mbps/10mbps line speed
  • At least a soft cap of 400GB
  • Flexible billing which allows me to pay however I want
  • Budget of ~R1000/month (all inclusive)

Given my history with them, I'd love to go onto MWeb's 10mbps Premium package with line rental but at ~R1300 that's a bit heavy on my budget for now. Obviously as business picks up, I can make that move, but for now, I'd be hard pressed to manage it.

EDIT: I've just been informed that despite my advanced notice that I'm not going to be able to satisfy the debit order, Nexus ISP has submitted it to the bank anyway and when it bounces they're going to suspend my service. Really glad I didn't cancel my MWeb (just downgraded it) so I can use that as a backup.

The MWEB Standard 10Meg has an FUP of 350GBs if I remember.

Vox as a service has been up & down the last month so don't know if I'd recommend them at the moment - certainly not for your only ISP.

But I can confirm they do accept EFT payments, and after the 25th as well ; made mine yesterday, a day earlier than I might have (for me, requires 2 days, as I pay from a bank other than FNB, which is their bank, if memory serves me correctly).

EDIT: just checked a payment ; they're definitely FNB, so if your a/c is at FNB, you could literally do the EFT transfer on the last day of each month, with Vox.

What are you using the line for?

EDIT:

Ignore that it doesn't matter the following solution will work for anything:

For 400GB you can get an Afrihost 200gig bundle(4meg line and data) for R638(or 10meg for R758), add in Afrihost Plus+ for R99 which will double your data to 400GB and give you a soft cap of 128Kb/s. Then add in the R200ish voice line rental and you're under your budget.

Also no shaping on capped and as far as I can see AH has the best international redundancy when SEACOM takes a dump.

EDIT EDIT: oh and the soft cap speed may be measly but it's plenty for you to jump online to buy a top-up if you use extra a specific month.

EDIT EDIT EDIT: and it's uncapped midnight to 6am...

Back to MWEB, of course.

Yes he should just ignore the fact that it's out of budget and the thresholds are too low.

EDIT: sorry I may get in trouble for that, I'll try:

Please kindly refrain from peddling your useless nonsense/"advice"

Plus also gives you 500mb mobile data and simfy which is great

No it's not, and no they aren't. Capped 200GB + 200GB @ R399.

Lol at "nonsense/advice". You're just describing your own ignorance here.

Yes because 200GB split between day-time and night-time data is incredibly useful for business.... I'm sorry but there is absolutely no advantage to Mweb over Afrihost in this case(and most other cases as well).

The other 200 is night time data. Afrihost is uncapped at night and doubling your data for just R99 is a great deal.

Afrihost is amazing value for money. My account works perfectly for everything I've tried. R399pm for 200GB and R99pm for Afrihost Plus to double the data and get a Simfy account worth R60pm.

Quality over quantity for me.

Quality - as in why the OP would love to go back to MWEB... And can.

Afrihost's network is rock solid. Streams anything in HD, I haven't had any gaming issues (even with Blizzard games, which the old MTN network struggled with), latency is good and it is properly unshaped on the capped and business accounts.

Afrihost has been unaffected by the recent Seacom issues too, which is more than most ISP's can boast.

Good to hear. I've been doing that all daily for years without a hitch.

Have you been jumping from uncapped to uncapped then there is your problem. Even though we have 2 heavy uncapped pushers in this thread its not better unless you pay stupid money for it (they won't see it this way).

Try any free capped account to try out the speed and see if you are happy with it (almost guarantee you will be).

I was on Axxess uncapped and I agree with you its underwhelming (used it for a month and had to change), I thought I would give them another shot and went over to the capped 300gig with the 12pm-6am. My usage is now 600gigs a month and my line runs at 95%-100% of what its capable of at all times (quality plus quantity).

If you want affordable great internet I would go to Crystalweb, Vox, Axxess and Afrihost. Webafrica has a stupid cancellation period and enough has been said about Mweb (you can make up your mind on that one).

Crystal Web Premium uncapped is pretty good. It's what I would recommend.
