Recommend me a TV

The only reason you'd want to use optical is if you can't use HDMI for some reason.

Well, all the TV's I am looking at have HDMI, so that will be 1st point of call, my HT system specifically states HDMI as well, so I dont know why both HDMI and optical were connected.

Well you won't be getting dolby TrueHD or DTS MA with optical.

Optical gives better digital sound.
Unfortunately it doesn't.

For the formats it can support (Dolby Digital and DTS) it is in fact identical.

The reason it's not better is that it doesn't support anything beyond those formats. So no HD audio.

Also if using optical out from a TV in most cases it's just stereo.

All good info, but jumping the gun here. Let me first get a damn TV again. Insurance will probably take a week or two.

Now I need help from you boffins out there please. The SAMSUNG PS51D550 was Full HD 3D, and I have to claim the closest to what I had, so I need to find SAMSUNG 3D TV's close to 51" to know what replacement value I should ask for. I dont want to rip the insurance a new one and claim for a 65" curved TV at R40K for instance.

I can only find the SAMSUNG UE55JS9000 currently in the market that is close to 51" and supports 3D.

Is it not possible to repair plasma TV sets? I often hear about gas that needs to be replaced.

No such thing as plasma refill, electronics have a finite lifespan, Plasmas are about 40 to 60 000 hours, which equates to 10 to 14 years or so of watching at 8 hours a day, but as with anything you'll start to notice degradation as time goes on.

3D TVs died in 2016 and that Samsung is about that age, claim for a replacement TV of equivalent spec or roughly what you paid for it originally.

Yep, it's just over R24K. I will see what they say, will never buy that though. Overkill for me.

I paid R12K (5 years ago) and they offer R7K. That is not the point though, they must replace like for like, or at least put me in the same situation as I was before the loss.
