Recommend PC Speakers

My only concern now, apart from the price of the Altec (which I still need to get) is that the Altec's are 90 Watts RMS (50 + 20 + 20) as apposed to the logitech which are 200 Watts RMS (120 + 40 + 40). I know power isn't "everything" but I want speakers with some serious boom (not necessarily base) but enough voomah to blow me away.

The Altecs are powerful enough I'm sure, really.

Most of those 200Watts from the Logitechs come purely from the sub. And Altecs ratings are supposed to be a lot more conservative anyway.

My Altecs are more than loud enough, I could never turn them up to more than 3, maby just on 4 lights (out of 5).. a bit too loud. And the clarity is amazing right up to almost full volume.. or as loud as i could go :p

The price for the Altecs was the same as the Logitechs when I bought mine. Got them for R1440, which is almost exactly what the Z2300's cost.

Ok, you've sold me! :-) Now to find them. Buycomputers.co.za doesn't have them on their website anymore, I'll email them to ask just incase. I'm going to try get a price from Esquire tomorrow.

I've currently got 30W Creative Soundworks speakers, which just don't cut it. I hope the 90W ones are "loud enough" - but what's selling me is the clarity everyone seems to rave about and the fact that there are 2 aux inputs (one for the ipod/zune and one for the pc)

Ja, the extra input is nice, and so is the control panel. But whats great is the wireless remote! naah.. it sjust novelty.. wheres off after you change the volume with it about twice.. I'm not sure when anyway would really need it.

Ok, haven't read the thread so I don't know what has been recommended. Just get the highest wattage you can find if you want something that will blow you away. I have some nice Miyako speakers bought at the flea market. Not very large but rated at 1000W each. The flashy lights look really good on the sub which is also the control unit. Now if I can just find a place to put all of it in my tight little corner here...

Don't believe any of the THX hype. If anyone tells you their product is THX certified they are clearly lying to you unless they came to your house during the certification process. Only a complete setup, ie. speaker positioning, furniture location, type of materials, air pressure, your dog and your cat, your breathing :p, etc. can be THX certified. There is some nice sound effects like EAX which can make it sound like you are in a auditorium or in a fishtank for instance.

I used to have a nice little setup.

a 1970s Pioneer valve amp
and a 1979 Denon amp
running 4.0 spaker setup with me ol' SB live value and lovely, large floor standing spakers.

pitty the valve amp died before Doom 3 came out :(
I know where you can get a valve amp if you are interested. ;)

Ok...so apparently, the Altec Lansing MX5021's cannot be bought anymore. No one has stock, and they can't get stock either...so I'm going to go for the Logitech Speakers

Can anyone here get me Altec Lansing MX5021's and at what price?

Darn, that's a real shame. It did seem as if they'd reached "end-of-line" status when I bought 2 sets, 3 months ago through Esquire in Midrand.

Also bought two from Buycomputers..

Too bad you cant get them, im sure for music they would be better than Z2300's. But tell us what yuou think of the Logitechs.. I've heard them and the bass is amazing.. but a bit stupidly high, and doesnt sound that good, just nice for impressing people.

Surly, if the bass is "too much" I could always use the equaliser in itunes to "downtune" it?

I used to have this Sony Walkman Equaliser, a nifty gadget which made music through headphones sound a million times better...haven't seen one in ages, and mine was sadly lost!

i have the Z5500. Nice. The windows rattle before i even reach the boost stage.
I'd like to take a spoon and go visit the inventor of the 2-prong plug though. It's cost me 5 fuses already and 15mm fuses are hard to come by.

Also got the Z5500, I changed to cord to a 3 pin plug 1 :) , only blew 1 fuse which I was lucky enough to find in my broken screen :D great speakers, just need to get a nice X-fi sound card now :D

You can always replace it with a higher rated fuse which somewhat negates the protection it offers. Makes one wonder why they make speakers that may not be able to handle the current they are meant to handle.
