Reddit users revolt over plan to charge API fees

Reddit's plan to charge third-party apps that make heavy use of its API for their mobile apps has drawn massive backlash from the platform's users.

Ars Technica reports that hundreds of subreddits protesting the move plan to go dark for 48 hours from 12 June 2023.

Well it is Reddit's platform and they have costs to cover. If apps are costing them, then sure.
Maybe the cost is not aligned
If their app wasn't so shite and full of ads, maybe it would've been ok.
Well then pay for an app that you want.

Which alternative app can be used for reddit?

Edit: I see there are in app purchases. Does this include no ads?

Agreed. I tried their app again - and was reminded how **** it is.

Apollo is fantastic - Craig even mentioned it on WWDC last night. For an Indy App, that I super impressive.

I did, I paid for Relay.
Now Reddit is gonna kill it and I won't even get my money back.

I get the sense that you don't quite know whats happening in this case though.

Not just the app, look at your data usage - the official app uses so much more data it's daft. I'll be supporting the blackout on the 12th though - I suspect it's gonna be a very productive day globally. :)

Relay is one of the only Apps I have ever paid for on my phone. Very sad that it's going away. :(

That's because the official app is bloated with ads.

I would happily support Christian with his Apollo app - but what's the point if Reddit is effectively going to kill the API.

I hope they come to their senses.

Have heard that it's in some way related to the Reddit IPO that is in the works, maybe they are trying to show potential investors that they can monetize the user base. Think it might be a major own goal if they carry on for this..

This reminds me of a video I saw, where a guy blew off his toes with a shotgun - by his own stupidity. Reddit board members effectively doing the same thing here.

This whole going dark thing is a very good idea actually. If users do a stay away and major subreddits go dark - that hits Reddit directly in their pockets.

Best version of Reddit innit.

They got a CFO 2 years ago so this makes sense.
