Reddit API fee plan causes user revolt

Ars Technica reports that hundreds of subreddits protesting the move plan to go dark for 48 hours from 12 June 2023.

I am sure Reddit's CEO is getting sleepless nights to know that the users of reddit will be using it for the other 363 days of the year. If they have a problem with reddit, just move to another site.

I am with Louis on this, it is a limpwristed "solidarity" protest because most people don't actually care about it.

Now take those numbers and think of the costs associated in serving that when someone else just uses a app wrapper.
Again, no one is protesting the API not being free, it's how high the cost is. You seem to have completely missed the point of the protest.

They really have which is why I am not engaging them.

We are all for charging for the API; no one is disputing that. What the issue is (one of a few) is the high cost that effectively kills 3rd party apps.

Let's take Apollo - for them to break even, they would need to charge users $5 a month AND have 12k subscribers each month.

That is not within their realm of possibility.

noob question, but why cant they simply move to cheaper hosting?
and also, arent they making enough money from adverts to pay for their hosting.

I mean MYBB is free from all the adverts the site runs, unlike Carbonite that asks for Donations.
AND runs adverts.

No, what I see is a company driving the protest beyond just that because they are to lose substantial revenue in their apps for services they don't pay for being locked.

Again, I don't disagree about the price but this is a Duke whipping peasant frenzy.

Because with third party apps there are no adverts. The app developer gets to monetize the ads NOT the source.
