I think that is really why us whitey non-ANC types get so hot under the collar ( me anyway! ). It is incompetence, corruption, self-enrichment and waste on the part of all levels of govt that gets to me. There is a LOT of money to get things right - Trev and Pravin are mightily efficient. But these flaws affect us all.

Ivy and Manto are just shockingly bad - even half-competence could improve things for everybody in their ministries.

A slap on the wrist for corruption in Parliament of all places - Travelgate.

Juicy board positions for those with influence, no worries about conflicts of interest.

Huge salaries for municipal officials in little villages and towns.

A complete lack of urgency in dealing with crime.

Gazillions of Rand set aside for housing the poor just not spent.

I could go on for pages too.....

But whine about it and you are a "racist". Stuff them!

Couldn't do that during apartheid. Had to look out for that gang called the SAP.;) Who could detain and assault you without reason. Today i can go wherever i like without fear.

Again, the SAP would detain and assault me back in the day without a friggin reason, simply because i'm black and driving in town at night.

I put the blame squarely on the shoulders of Thabo Mbeki. He is the manager and it is he who should be kicking butts when things are not being done right. Instead he seems more interested in creating some grand legacy.

Right now they should seek out a few corrupt officials and slap them with the full applicable sentence which I believe is life in prison.

The only time I would call it racism is when it is implied that corruption, incompetence and nepotism are things unique to people of a particular colour.

You've got it wrong. It is evidence of govt stupidity. You see, when "rationalising" the 2 queues down to 1, the govt retained the slow "non-european" queue for ALL to share, and canned the fast "europeans only" queue, instead of the other way round!

Jozi - you want to HONESTLY tell me you dont see ANYTHING wrong with South Africa? Highest Crime rate on the entire planet? Same for rapes. Corruption at the HIGHEST levels of goverment - and evident everywhere else. Anything to do with service delivery or delivery to the public now - it doesnt even work for a small minority of the population - it works for NO ONE.

And you want to tell me things are better? You are blind to not see the major screw ups of our current goverment.

Nobody here has said there is nothing wrong. Many people in this thread have said that things are very much better than they were - you'd have to be blind not to see that.

You really dont know much about your own history, and the history of this country do you?
Some of the biggest thugs in those days wore blue, and they would happily search you and take your money or watch or anything of value, who could you complain to? the Police? ya right, complaining got you a beating and a few nights in the cell.

I don't recall a fast europeans only queue. I do recall having to stand in several queues to get something simple done. And they were all slow.

Many things are better. Some people only want to see the negative. That's no better than turning a blind eye to the positives.

This thread is about June 16 1976, when 12 year old kids were shot with live ammunition by grown men. Wheather you belive it or not is of no consequence. It happened.

Guys, i'm not saying that our country is perfect. I'm simply making a point. We can't live in a constantly negative environment as if our entire lives depend on the government. They mess up a lot yes, but there are millions of south Africans that are making this place work and it does work. Stop trying to put fear in people's minds about a supposed imminent collapse of our country. Let's make it work.

Even as a white person I had occasion to be threatened and intimidated by SAP thugs. It was very obvious that being white was the only thing protecting me from something much worse.

Which is why I specifically said some, the troublemakers need to be severely dealt with and the rest allowed to carry on peacefully.
