Hi Everyone

I am looking for something similar to logmein but preferably an open source product, or some form of freeware application.

I tried Mikogo and it works fine, but you can only view the remote desktop. I want to be able to take control of it if at all possible.

Thanks in advance.

www.teamviewer.com - remote desktop software does not get better than this!

One solution for everything
While most competitors offer different packages for remote support, remote administration, training and sales (and also charge for them...) TeamViewer is the one-stop solution for everything you need: TeamViewer includes all modules in one simple and very affordable package.

Remote administration of unattended servers
TeamViewer can also be used to control unattended computers and servers. System service installations even allow remote reboot and reconnect.

File transfer
TeamViewer comes with integrated file transfer that allows you to copy files and folders to and from a remote partner - which also works behind firewalls

Highest security standard
TeamViewer is a very secure solution. All versions feature completely secure data channels with key exchange and AES (256 Bit) session encoding, the same security standard used by https/SSL.
More information

Online status display
Are your team members in many different locations? Need to present your desktop or collaborate on a document? In the TeamViewer partner list you can see who is available and connect with them in one mouse click.

Remote support without installation
With TeamViewer you can remotely control any PC anywhere on the Internet. No installation is required, just run the application on both sides and connect - even through tight firewalls.

Remote presentation of products, solutions and services
TeamViewer allows you to present your desktop to a partner. Share live demos, products, and presentations over the Internet within seconds.

Works behind firewalls
The major difficulties in using remote control software are firewalls and blocked ports, as well as NAT routing for local IP addresses.
If you use TeamViewer you don't have to worry about firewalls: TeamViewer will find a route to your partner.

Browser based access
On the road and need to control a remote computer? Why don't you use TeamViewer Web Connector? The purely html and flash based solution can be used from nearly any browser and operating system.

Very competitively priced, free versions available
TeamViewer offers great value for low prices. TeamViewer even offers a free version for non-commercial use.

Optimized performance
Whether you have a LAN or dial-up connection, TeamViewer optimizes display quality and speed depending on your network connection.

i use VNC.
its quick to set up. and works well

logmein lets you control your machine and you dont have to pay !

i use logmein hamachi quite find it to be slow at times but Teamviewer seems quick and fast

What about Windows remote desktop? Just forward port 3389 on your router.

Ultra VNC, been using it for years. But honestly nothing beats the default windows rdp client. Just make sure the port mentioned above is forwarded on the inbound router. Same thing with VNC although you can specify a port manually for the VNC server and then forward that.

The web based software is painful.

I use the commercial version of TeamViewer.
Would definitely recommend the free one too but only if you do not use it too often.

Teamviewer also have the commercial one because I use it hours upon hours a day, but the free one is just as good as long as you don't use it hours day after day.

Teamviewer works 100% , using commercial. One time fee for lifetime license on the current version. If you are going the free route, just tick the "Private None-Commercial" box :D AMMYY also works although I've seen some latency problems since it is routed internationally.

Using Teamviewer at the moment to manage my home PC :)

Prefer it to Remote Desktop since you don't need to have a Windows password on your PC.

Tight VNC has been my preferred VNC viewer for some years. Perfect if you are accessing devices over LAN or private WAN/VPN (as opposed to random internet connection.)

Ultra VNC has some nice features and has a version that is "Teamviewer-like" but their website and the applications themselves are somewhat skanky - choose your download links carefully.

Teamviewer is an excellent product when you have to support random users over random internet connections. It is not free for commercial use but in a commercial environment, only one side of the connection needs to be licensed. The Quick Support version is like a portable app and doesn't need to be installed, so that is the version to put on you users' PC's and there is a Host version to for access to servers. I don't like to use it with servers because concurrent rdp and Teamviewer sessions mess with each other. Teamviewer is sentient to commercial use and becomes increasingly passive aggressive if you don't "play fair." Although I prefer to solve this type of problem with FOSS, I legalised Teamviewer licenses for our support team because it is hands down the best remote software for our particular current use case.

Chrome remote desktop viewer is also worth a look and is a free plugin for Chrome. Works in a Teamviewer-like way but requires Chrome and a Google account on both ends. Haven't tried it for a couple of years so not up to date on how well it works vs Teamviewer currently
