DynDNS can also run on the PC. Choose only one PC on your home network to update your dyn alias (other they will get multiple updates from each PC, and start getting annoyed).

Personally, I have OpenWRT on my router, with DropBear SSH enabled on a high port. SSH to the router, then I can reach any other host on my network on any port I like, all strongly secured using SSH and key auth.
 
Still the good ol Remote Desktop and Ultra VNC server are the best forms of remote connectivity. Responsiveness with logmein and teamviewer is just shocking, think its all routed through an international server. We use it in the event we dont have access to a router to setup port forwarding, TV and Logmein tunnel through HTTP making it easy to setup and use, but really sucks with flexibility and speed.

If you have a dyndns account, you can download the windows updater to keep it current. Hamachi is a nice vpn service to bypass port forwarding as well, but can effect speed negatively.

each windows installation by default allows one RDP connection, any more than that and you will need to setup winconnect services with 3 licenses at around $300 for all 3, as a package.

Agreed 100%. Those third-party remote viewers suck.

Use: Famatech Radmin, VNC, or RDC (aka Terminal Services, which is built into windows), with a dynamic DNS solution = win.

Because not all people know how to do that (set up router port forwarding etc) - it's much easier for them to just visit a website, click "install teamviewer", type a special code in, and voila. Little do they know how much of a degraded service they're getting then because of the lack a direct connection thanks to their firewalls setup etc - awful, especially for long term use.

Windows 7 Home Premium (and cheaper) don't have Terminal Server so you cannot RDP into it, only RDP from it into more expensive editions or server operating systems.
