Hey pp

I thought i would turn to you the pros and ask if there is a way to rename my exchange 2007 server without having to reinstall my server???

Thanks

No, I think that would be a VERY bad idea idea indeed.... Why do you want to rename it?

Well my boss and i are currently sitting at the office and he said to me that we have to rename the Exchange server i dunno why he wants to do it but ja... is there a way of doing it??? oh and my boss says its going to resolve the issues we have been having with it lately...

Yes, its easy, but it WILL cause problems that cannot be fixed ;) Also, even if the problems did not effect you immediately, then every time you experienced a problem later on, you would wonder if the renaming caused it. I would not recommend it at all....

My boss says he is willing to accept the repercussions as he is aware that it will cause issues once u rename it... and the thing is when we install SP1 for exchange 2007 it tells you to rename the server then reinstall but it doesnt allow us to reinstall it.... thats where the problem lies...

Good luck :) Hope you did not have plans for this weekend! Make a backup, and don't forget to update all the clients with the new name. Also, OWA will probably not work....

Procedure I advise, to ensure it all goes smoothly :

1) export all mailboxes to PST files, to another server, there is a tool to do this
2) backup any other data on the server you want
3) test those backups
4) wipe the server, and reinstall with new name
5) recreate mailboxes and restore from pst files
6) update clients configurations

This way you are 100% sure there is nothing remaining from the old system.

Good luck!

Well guys i warned my boss not to do it... and what happened....... he spent the whole of yesterday and most of last nyt rebuilding the Exchange server after he renamed it lol... :p
