Renault maintenance....

Co-worker took his Megane in for a service and they also told him that the brakes and clutch are in imminent need of replacement, at very much the same prices. He enquired about trading it in but was not happy with the value they offered for his car. I told him to try out Honda as they have been known to do good deals on trade ins.

Next day he arrived at work in a new Honda Ballade Elegance, that was 8 months ago and he is still very happy with his new car.

Not sure of the point of this? Were the prices quoted for maintenance excessive? Did Honda give him a far better deal? Do they just have better salesmen? Is the point just to pat yourself on the back for telling him to go to Honda?

Sorry, I'm just confused as to what you're actually telling us.

Do the repayments cost less then ad hoc repaid (I'm assuming the Megane was paid off)? If not then it's still not the smartest move especially since the Megane is probably a fancier car than the Ballade.

Those items are hardly Renault specific and will cost just as much in others cars of the same class.

It will cost me R3500 to replace all disc and pads on my car if I do it myself.

Same price if the workshop does just the fronts.

*****

Personally though unless you can feel there's a problem with the clutch or hear the brakes squeezing I would just ignore them and soldier on until it's necessary to do the work.

My front discs and pads allegedly needed to be replaced two services ago...I'm still waiting for the pad sensors to moan.

mmm.. no they dont? they charge very similar as opel from what i could see..

AutoZone will have a clutch for more than half of R5000, and brakes too.

This is excluding mark-up and labour.

In November 2013, DTM Renault (Strand) charged me R3300 to do some work on my car - it mainly went in for the front disks that needed to be replaced.
Suffice to say;

Labour was R1050
Parts were R1670

I know a while back they came out with a set price list, displayed at dealers, for various services. I find this online :

http://testing.renault.co.za/services/fixedPrice.html

I've phoned Renault Bryanston three times today to confirm whether that's still in place (I highly doubt it since it's dated June 2011), every time their service department is busy on the line, or away from their desks etc. Also phoned to enquire about taking the new Clio RS Cup for a test drive. Salesman told me they only have the lux, but it's the identical car so I can just test that. What a moron.

Surely you have your own services that you can refer to Dubes? I've already confirmed servicing costs for a few different Honda and Toyota models, along with labour rates etc. for us to compare. As above I tried for Renault, but they aren't helping. Will phone Citroen this afternoon and see if I can get info out of them too.

I do. But, sorry to say, I see very little value in digging through all my invoices for the past two years (yes, I'm overdue on my taxes) to find them at the moment.

A man's mind changed against his will is a mind that remains unchanged.

After that message I remembered I may have a scanned copy on my computer. I did.

Awesome, thanks for that. So total cost with VAT was R2134? Cheaper than I expected to be fair. When was that service done? If recently then you're lucky to have a 10 year old car with such low mileage. The Verso service quote I got for a 2007 model 1.6 (we owned one years ago) earlier was "Around R1,500 all inclusive, we can give you a more accurate quote when you bring the car in." I think the Verso could be classified as a Scenic competitor?

Edit: After another call I was quoted around R2,500 for the same service from a different dealership. Colour me amazed.

@ Dubes - So I finally got hold of Renault regarding the servicing. That service of yours must have been years ago. On a 2005 Renault Scenic 1.6 petrol for the 120,000kms service, they quoted me just shy of R3,800 for parts and labour, including vat. This is the exact same service you posted according to your breakdown, I double checked with him.

Their labour costs per hour are now R666.90, including vat. Holy poop. To be fair, Toyota's arent much better at R600 per hour.

The last service I did at Honda Midrand (I didn't pay for it as it was thrown in when I bought my Accord) was last month. They needed 3.5 hours of labour, the inc vat cost of this was R399 per hour.

HOLY. ****BALLS.

Yes, but still, when you service at Renault, do they put Elf oil in your engine and fill up your tank with Elf petrol ?

All Renaults have elf stickers on them. Clearly they must only use elf petrolium products then.

It says so right on the invoice he posted. They use the prescribed oil just like every other manufacturer uses Castrol or whatever they've been approved to use.

More worrying is the almost R500 for "sundries" bull****.

Why do they use Castrol when every Renault have a elf sticker on?

I didn't say they use Castrol.

Please learn the read. The invoice clearly states ELF oil which I'm sure only an official Renault dealership would use anyway as that's what's fitted out of the factory.

Most cars have a sticker with their choice of oil in the doors or in the fuel panel, Renault just choose to push their fellow French company a little more I guess.
