My drivers licence expires on the 31st of January, and I plan to fly down to SA from 1-14 January, so is it possible for me to renew my drivers about 2-3 weeks before it expires? and also how long does the whole process take as this will be my first time renewing my drivers licence.

You must renew your licence before it expires, otherwise you have to pay for a temp licence. I renewed mine recently in Stellenbosch where it is not too busy and it took about 20min in total. The new card took about 6 weeks to be issued.

Renewed mine 3 weeks back in Centurion, they say it'll be ready after 8 weeks, golden rule is to renew it 4-6 weeks before it expires

You basically fill in the form, do the eye test and then you're good to go an just collect your new license a few weeks later. You're likely going to have to get a temp license if you're renewing so shortly before it's expiry date.

Do you know if it will be possible for my parents to fetch the licence for me as I will not be in the country then and then they can just post it to me?

yep though you`ll need a police certified affidavit stating you give them permisison to collect on your behalf,
that's what happened when my parents collected mine.

Yes you can renew it up to the day before it expires. If you do so then the current license remains valid for a further three months, you do not need to take out a temp license.

I will post the exact wording from the license renewal form I was sent, that is as soon as I can find the darn thing.

When you do the renewal ask for the form you need to fill in to give your parents permisssion to fetch it on your behalf. I have just been through this with Ekhuruleni (Edenvale). They have a standard for which is an affidavit that you must fill in, get copies of your ID and the person fetching's ID, and get it certified by a commissioner of oaths. Note they are strict that it has to be the commissioner of oaths in person, not a person acting ex officio.

I went a bit earlier in the year and was sorted within 20 minutes - but I went early on a Saturday and was #2 in the queue. They also had stats on a board there for how long it took on average to get things done at the different 'offices' in the region. Ours took on average only 16 days compared to some of the other offices that took upward to 300 days. Crazy stuff.

+1 On renewing it quite a bit in advance. Also rock up early so that you can be helped faster.

You can renew it early and you can get someone else to pick it up, there is a form you fill in, you also don't need a temporary license.

You need an affidavit, signed by a commissioner of oaths, if you want someone else to fetch it. I was not allowed to collect my wife's licence, even with her ID.

My license has been expired almost a year now.. funnily enough I got stopped at a roadblock in December .. they looked at my license.. gave it back to me and just told me to move along. I suppose they were just looking for drunk drivers at the time.

I went today, 2 hours, damn hot, rude ppl and the roof had a hole in it that was scary

I applied over the holidays. Will take 8 weeks or so. The person doing collection will probably also need a certified copy of your ID / passport. Your passport has your ID number in it.

Requirements for license renewal and proxy collection are all detailed here:
