For a revival of this thread for more up-to-date information.
I renewed my driver's license on 12 January 2017 at Centurion in Gauteng.
To clear up some of the ambiguity up:
- You need your ID, copy of your ID, cash, your current driver's license (if it is still valid, otherwise it costs more, see below) and a black pen. That is all you need to bring with you, nothing else.
- No physical photos needed anymore if you do not require a temporary license. They take it with a webcam.
- Price is R228 but cash only, credit card facilities are only used for motoring services, such as registrations and transfers.
- Cost is R300 if your license has expired already, you do require 1 photo then as you have to take a temporary license, but it hardly adds any extra time as it is done at the cashier where you pay.
- All in all it takes about roughly 3hours, the que looks misleadingly long, but it is how they control the flow inside the building. They only let groups of 4-5 in at a time, so que jumping is harder as people have been standing together for a while, so that is a good thing. It took me 2 hours from the back to get inside the building, then another 30mins inside waiting to be helped to get my eye test, fingerprints taken and photo captured (it is all at the same person, so no point in doing eye tests prior, as you hardly save any time). There are 6 booths in assisting here. This takes about 5mins, then about 10-15mins at the cashier side and you are done for the day.
- You come back in 28 days to pick-up your card, this takes about roughly 60-90mins.
Out of observation and having to be there a few times the last few weeks, a general rule of thumb will be about 1 hour wait for every 60 people in front of you.
I can confirm that Waltloo, Akasia works roughly the same, so do not let them take your ID photo outside, as that is not needed anymore for your permanent disc.
