Hi all,

Just thought I'd make a thread of this so people don't get caught out at the renewal stations. The wife and I renewed our licenses last week and were unsure what to bring. Why not check the net I hear you say, sure did, see below:

The problem is that this is false. The only thing we needed was our old license and our ID books ( cash of course to pay ). No copies were required and the new system in place takes your photo, fingerprints and signature all digitally. There are still little shops and even a hut at the testing station offering ID photos and copies of ID's. A lot of people went and did them only to realize that this was NOT required any more. So if you are renewing, check with your testing station whether this is needed or not, it may save you a couple of rands and the effort.

This renewal was done at Rossburgh in Durban but I'd assume all testing stations have been updated.

I'm going to renew mines at Pinetown tomorrow. What time do they usually open? And how much cash do I need to take?

I can't swear to Pinetown but Rossburgh was R250 each and they opened at 7am till 2:30pm.

Seems to differ slightly - I went to Midrand about 2 weeks back.

They did take my photo and I also thought I didn't need a photo, however they took it as I paid - one for my temporary license an d the other I have no idea, but they took it! Was R230.00 and R70.00 for the temp

If I got glasses after I got my drivers, do I have to redo my test?

I had to take id photos for renewal in Cape Town. They needed two.

Seems to be different in Cape Town.

with all these differebt requirements, perhaps they are slowly starting to implement new systems(pcs and other equipment) as the old stuff starts failing...

If you are going to get a temp license, then you'll most likely need to take photos with

If you're going to Pinetown you only need photos if you're doing a temp license....

I'm guessing they're rolling out the new "digital" system at licensing centers slowly.. eventually they will all use a similar system.

Quick question- how early can one renew their license? Mine expires in September, but I would prefer to renew it sooner and get it out of the way if possible...

Renewed mine at Malmesbury around a year ago. They had the digital system but did take one of the photographs I had brought along to stick on the form (why, I don't know, since the photo that the digital system took at the licensing station was the one that ultimately ended up on the new card).

You can renew your license 1 day after you got your new one if you so choose.

Do they still have the "system" where you have to pay in cash for the exact amount because they don't give change? I tried calling to find out how much the fee is, but got redirected to a general Tshwane information line. Does anyone know off the top of their head how much the fee is at Centurion, and whether or not you have to pay cash?
