Replace chain only or enite drivetrain/groupset?

After a hard but fun weekend the bike ended up with a chain that had so much slack it was impossible to downhill in highest gear with the chain not coming off.

Seeing as the odo just ticked over 2000km I decided to take it in for a service and instructed them to only replace the chain. A Shimano HG40 was fitted but when I went to fetch the bike I found it was slipping in the two highest (smallest) gears. They replaced the cassette with a Shinano HG51 (still 8 speed). So I now have an almost complete HyperGlide drivetrain except for the Suntour SR blades. All that for R500 and it rides like new

Cool man, glad you managed.

Yeah if a new chain slips (and the gears are set correctly) then the cog is kaput and should be replaced asap, lest you finish a chain in 200km.

I'm just glad it did not cost an arm and a leg and its a slight upgrade from the KMC chain and HG31 cassette I had. I did contemplate to upgrade to something better, but since everything better are 9 or 10 speed it would result in new shifters and what not. I'll do that in another 2000 or hopefully 5000 km :)
