Hi.

My FTTH has been installed and is working well.

I got a short cable that goes from the box in my home to the fiber terminal.

Does anybody know where I can buy a replacement 7+ meter cable as I would like to move the fiber terminal to a different room?

Who installed the fibre? Can you post some photos from the Termination point to the CPE/ONT?

Thanks for the response :-)

The fibre was installed by openserve (Telkom).

It uses an SC connector, shown in image below.

The only part of the setup that is not wireless is the fiber cable, and I want to put the terminal & router in my study because at the moment it is next to the kitchen with no power point in site. So i have to run an extension for power and that looks really crap.

One supplier I can suggest is Dartcom. They will make you a patch cord with connectors of your choice and length. A little pricey but yo will get what you pay for and it will be tested and comply with standards. Treat with care though. A much better solution than a copper extension in the longer run.

012 345 7530. They are probably the ones supplying Telkom with the patch cords.

That was a fail during the install process, should have let them do that for you. Hopefully the patch cable solution can help you out above there.

TBH - most people would not know what a fibre installation entails. And in many cases the installation is done by multiple teams - i.e. one team runs the cable and some time later another team comes and installs the termination point and possibly another then arriving with the ONT.

I think the more pertinent question is if a user is actually allowed to move the equipment without voiding warranty/support? I would rather see if they can not move the whole termination point to where you wanted it though. Running a 7m fibre-extension to the ONT will cause other problems if the cable is not properly protected (cats and dogs love chewing on it, and your domestic will bend the sh*t out of it when vacuuming).

That goes without saying. The patch cord needs to be protected in a duct. But not impossible. And BTW, these patch cords are actually quite robust these days and can put up with a fair amount of abuse. And 7m is not all that long either.

However I agree that the better solution would have been to make sure the ONT is installed at a point more convenient for you in the first place. Hence why I have already installed a suitable duct from the point the fibre would terminate on my home to the point where I want the ONT to be installed.

Just use a longer patch cord and locate ONT where you see fit, if it breaks buy a new one....only problem is they are bright yellow and hard to hide :-)

Dartcom is indeed the supplier for Telkom. I phoned them and ordered 2 X 10 meter patch cables. Cost about R300. Excellent customer service. Now I am just waiting for the cables.
