What would all you wise folks suggest?

My S10 is on it's last legs. Thought I would get 4 years out of it, but my battery only lasts until 4pm, even after replacing it. I'm convinced that Samsung is pushing dodgy updates to force an upgrade :/

In not going to fork out R10k+ upfront on a phone so it needs to be on contract. Budget is R500-R600 max, don't care about minutes and data, it's going to be a throwaway sim.

Thanks!

If you want a phone that is going to last you 4 years or more, Just buy an Iphone. No android will last you that long unfortunately and you will have to rinse and repeat every year if you buy another android. So pick your poison.
Without getting into that debate, I'm not prepared to start investing in that ecosystem.

The phone itself is still fine apart from the battery life, even after replacing the battery and doing a lot of clean-up. Which is why I'm suspecting the update to be the issue.

The Xiaomi 11T pro seems decent, but the contract prices I'm seeing are way out of whack with the cash price...

If you want a smaller phone.

If you want a bigger phone and save some money.

Seems about in line with what you want to pay?

That ecosystem is the only one that will last you, maybe its time to start considering it, I am still yet to witness an android phone lasting that long. My previous iphone 6s lasted me 4 years , only reason i upgraded is because it got stolen.

I’d also go with an iPhone, despite being an ardent Android fan I borrowed one recently after my phone was stolen and everything just works.

Also it didn’t have much effect on my ecosystem, I could transition to Apple without any hitches, despite also only using Windows pc’s. A big plus is also backups, you can restore from a backup on to any currently supported iPhone and even iPad and absolutely everything is restored, there’s virtually no device setup required, which is a huge advantage.

That being said I went back to Android because they are cheap and cheerful, I crack screens all the time and I sometimes have to go into sketchy areas and don’t want an overly expensive phone in my pocket.

But to me if you have the budget iPhone all the way, especially considering they have finally caught up to Android in many respects so many of iPhones previous limitations and being such a closed environment is now a moot point.

wireless charging, my note10 still has brilliant battery life after 3y. having said that i wiped/reinstalled after the last firmware upgrade and it performed way better incl the battery

Look, as much of an Apple fan as I am, with all things Apple in my life; if the dude is on Android and doesn’t want to invest in getting into the iOS ecosystem - that’s a fair enough reason to stay on Android.

iOS isn’t for everyone.

Samsung S7 Galaxy going on for 5 years. Battery still lasts a full day OST.
See no reason to spend thousands on a new phone just to try and impress the prick next door.

Mine is top notch too and as I use call recorder every day I cannot change....

Narrowed it down a bit.

Xiaomi 12:
- No IP rating. 3 years of OS updates.

Honor Magic 4 Pro:
- No gorilla glass. 2 years of OS updates.

Not sure which one would make for a better long term option...

It's all about your usage/requirements

Was in iOS from word for until my children destroyed two , bought a android as a stop gap, and then wondered wtf I was paying so much for iPhones. Have never gone back. My wife's iPhone still drives me nuts - the operating system is not conducive to my productivity and I don't hack or sideload.

Anyway , big screen, gaming? Or is it just budget?

I currently am running a Xiaomi 10T Pro Dual SIM 128GB with 128GB SD card and it does the job. My love is still a Nokia with Android One OS and perhaps you should look at those phones if you not a gamer. Unsure what their offerings are currently.

My Nokia 7 plus, to the other commentator, still working after 4 years. I only switched because I wanted a better screen, camera and Dual SIM . My kids have tried to destroy that phone. It's a Nokia. It's gonna destroy them.

I would have switched to another Nokia with Android One, but their stupid decisions in the last two years to charge 6k for phones with Snapdragon 400 series processes was not for me.

In addition, while the only thing I still hate about Xiaomi is their hard attempts to exfiltrate your data with their stupid apps . Why do I need a Xiaomi clock app (which requires location) when the default Android clock is sufficient. If anyone used an Android One phone knows , you see it.

As you can imagine, I am not using any Xiaomi apps or backup. I let Google do it , for which I trust a bit **more** than Xiaomi

Not heavy gaming, but a bit of Hearthstone here and there, and in the evenings before bed.

I do use my phone a lot during the day, with a lot of screen time. Browsing, emails, Teams meetings etc. so battery life is important but less of an issue with the fast charging Xiaomi and Honor above.

But I do enjoy having a high-ish end spec. Just for the piece of mind knowing that whatever I throw at it, it's not going to bog down...
