My solar geyser burst. The plumbing contractor from my insurance declined saying its an asbestos roof and they are not allowed to work over it. Insurance is going to pay me and I am supposed to find an installer myself.
This Geyser came with the house and I have no experience with housework. I got my first quote today when I sent an inquiry to a website that was like the first hit on google. They sent me someone who works under a different company name, quoted around 17000 and 80% is expected to be paid in advance. Is this standard? Anyways I am in no ways going to pay someone who just came over to my house and I dont know anything about.
I am still looking for some accredited installers to do the job, this is in southern suburbs, Cape town. any help or guidance will be highly appreciated.

You should also consider replacing the solar geyser with a normal geyser combined with a heat pump..

How much does it cost ?
we barely turn that thing on, maybe for 2 hour max in winter and in summer its always off.

I just replaced my original solar geyser tank after 10yrs of perfect maintenance free service. The new replacement geyser was coupled to the existing flat panel solar collector and cost R17k installed, and yes I had to pay 80% deposit.

The insurance paid in full and my excess was R1200.

The water is seriously hot. enough to boil an egg. Like the original one was.

I do not use eskom power for water heating in my house and in winter my solar geyser water is boosted by my gas geyser, providing 60° water 24/7. The combination gas/solar works perfectly and I never have to worry about loadshedding / power failures / heating times / limited hot water.

I've never gone without hot water.

You're welcome to come see the setup for yourself. I can give you the installers details if you want?
