Hi guys,

How easy is it to replace a laptop keyboard? I've got buttons missing and I can see that you get replacement keyboards from alienexpress but is it a DIY job or specialised?

thanks

I replaced a laptop keyboard a few years ago and it was very easy. See if there is a youtube vid of your model laptop, otherwise you will have to wing it.

Be careful, don't pull too hard, but you may have to use some force. My laptop's keyboard was held in place with screws and a piece of double sided tape. Not fun hearing tearing sounds as you lift the board :)

You will probably have to remove the bevel around your keyboard, the screws should be hidden behind it.

If you cannot find any videos for your model search for other laptops of the same make and close model, maybe they used the same methods.

Good luck.

It really depends on the laptop.. some you just undo 2 screws on the underside and the keyboard slides out... others can be complicated... most important for me is to avoid damaging any wiring or ribbon cables... Most laptops if you search dissasemble "laptop name" on youtube will give a result...

generally the keyboard is held in place by two or 3 screws on the bottom which are marked with the letter K.. some laptops require that the panel where the lights and power button etc are located, be removed as well..

The hardest part of replacing my Asus KB is waiting for the SAPO to deliver it...

Ive done it before in a B&B with a steak knife (long story). Its really not hard. I bet theres a Youtube video showing you how.

Anyone know how I can get the part number for the keyboard without opening it? my google skills suck.

thanks, I found that but don't see part numbers listed?

Sorry, I just posted that to show that you don't have to remove the cover as per the video above, this is one of those 2min jobs.

A quick google shows the following 3 SKUs 1R28D, 01R28D, V100830AS1 to be valid for the N3010 US-layout kbd which it shares with the (N4010 N4020 N4030 N5020 N5030 M5030 models)

Alternatively if you call dell with the service tag# they should be able to supply you with the part number.

thanks mate, I've popped the keyboard open and got the part number.

it's AEUM8R00110. I'm liasing with partaccessories and SPL to get me pricing but I'm sure I'll come right with the right part from here.

Just a final question, the ribbon that attaches the keyboard to the motherboard. How do you remove it?
Does the ribbon disconnect from the motherboard? If yes, do you get a new one with the new keyboard?
OR
Does the ribbon disconnect from the keyboard and you reconnect it to the new keyboard?

Just got comparative pricing from partaccessories and SPL.

partaccessories: R1060.20 inc vat
SPL: 2245.8 inc vat

partaccessories: battery: R560; Keyboard: R370 ( ex vat)
SPL: battery: R1150; Keyboard: R785 (ex vat)

Crazy price difference!!

Wrt the ribbon it usually disconects from the MB and comes with the keyboard.

Have a close look at the connector on the motherboard, it usually has a locking mechanism that slides away from the connector towards/over the cable. Other times it flips up a bit.
