requesting 3g coverage

Is there any way to get Vodacom/MTN to upgrade a specific tower in an area to give 3g coverage?

Yes, there is.
You need to call your Service provider and ask them for their banking details.
Deposit R2 000 000 into the account and request they upgrade it.

Is this specific tower in South Africa, and if so, then where exactly? - e.g. 2G CellID + province&city&suburb...

if there is no 3G now most likely you are in a small town in S.A ....meaning it is and i promise u unlikely you will see it(HSDpa) unless you host the annual KKNK or oyster festival..or even your own pomp festival....

The tower is at Malagas, its in the Western Cape (not sure of the cellId) There are loads of holiday houses in the (along the breede river) and farms in the area. 50km away is the small town Swellendam, which has 3g (according to MTN website). How many users would vodacom/mtn require for a 3g upgrade to be viable?

ah this brings back memories. and yes it is possible to get them to do it. it just takes awhile and requires alot of effort. have fun!

No current plans for 3G in the area. There is EDGE though.

3G upgrades are based on usage in the area. We monitor every tower and when we see enough traffic to warrant an upgrade, it's added to the list with the busiest areas obviously on top.

Other factors like local permissions and available transmission will be deciding factors as well.
