I am looking into a side hustle that involves reselling meat to some of my friends and maybe later expanding it to my neighborhood. I can get prepackaged meat at well below average market prices, sometimes more than 50% below pricing from PnP, checkers etc. All the meat is sourced from a reputable and fully licensed abottair.

My question is, do I need some sort of license or certificate to resell said meat? Fyi, all meat come in vacuum sealed packaging. To give you an idea, I am able to get fillet at around R130p/kg. So I am sure there will be a market for my product. I will most likely add a 5%-7% markup.

To start with, I will either deliver the meat, or freinds can collect. Will check viability of opening a small container type shop if the idea works.

dont forget tax after taking all the above into account.,

I looked into something similar years ago and from memory food has a lot of hoops to jump through. You need to have premises that meet certain standards, apply for a licence/permit to trade, there are packaging and labeling requirements etc.

All of the above will be handled by the abattoir. I will only be reselling the packaged meat. But thanks.

Several people here selling all sorts of stuff on WhatsApp groups, from frozen samosas, lunch to meat and cheese etc, I doubt they have any sort of licence

Easy to stay under the radar when running the business from the house etc different when: Will check viability of opening a small container type shop if the idea works.

And its not going to be viable at 5-7% markup if you doing deliveries and not doing really decent volumes.
Would suggest you start with a higher markup, and then provide bulk discount based on per KG amount ordered by the customer.

I would compile a Business Case for this.

Many years ago I was manufacturing "energy bars", granted I was the wholesaler, but what I thought people would buy for, and what they wanted to buy for was worlds apart, especially when they plan to resell it again.

Are you planning to store the product at all, or will you collect and deliver directly i.e. point-to-point?

I assume you have considered a refrigerated mode of transport and potential storage?

How would you possibly make any money with a tiny markup like that, even if customers collected from you it just wouldn't be worth the effort, nevermind covering all the expenses to run the business?

There will be a minimum order amount per customer. Orders will be collected max once a week at abottair. Customers will pay extra for delivery.

I already have a refrigerated trailer. And orders will be delivered same day as it is collected. Also have some home refrigeration already available. Im still working on the finer details. Just first wanted to get my head around the ol' redtape

Quantity.
And im not looking to get rich, just have some extra bucks for a dop or three. I have most of the infrastructure needed already, and all is paid for. Not much to lose
