Residential Fly Control

I spray cypermethrin around the house. Works quite good, until it rains. Then you spray again.

We have lavender around the house, my wife does not like it, but I do notice that we do not really have a fly infestation. Agree with @RonSwanson, clean your bin regularly. I clean my bin weekly after it is emptied.
Ah, now you have touched on an important topic: using natural repellents. It saves the lives of wagtails, mountain chats, geckos, lizards, chameleons and wasps. I have mint and basil in the house and 16 Bay trees outside.

Rosemary, Catnip, Nasturtiums and Citronella are also known to be good, and in the 50s and 60s, butcheries used the leaves of a weed called Caster-oil bush or Kasterolie plant (Ricinus Communis) to repel flies.

Edit: Just don't mess with the seeds, they are toxic.

My wife's friend claim this product works rather well.

I know you joking...

But. They inside the closed leaves. It caught 3 in the first 2 hours since it entered the house.

Read up about these. Big problem with flies here.

These need a lot of sun. So just check that out

You mind sharing details on exact name and where you bought it? I feel a sneaky Valentines gift coming..
Venus flytrap

Was bought at a Saturday market at willowbridge south. Usually there on Saturdays and Sundays according to wife. The lady selling it, however is from the southern suburbs in Cape Town. Don't have more detail than that unfortunately.

And yes it need loads of sun, and not norm tap water either. Like distilled water is preferred, and apparently the RO filter water is ok too. It should get it's food from the flies and not water.

I got one the other day from Builders of all places.

Not enough flies around so I've been zapping them with the racket and hand feeding.

And of course it's named Twoey.

Yeah they seem to be more like pets than plants. Pretty cool

Thanks alot. Yea i don't think they gonna survive a Courier Guy so if anyone knows of a place in or around Randburg somewhere would be great. I especially love the fact that its got a few offshoots and its not just one lazy dwarf sized trapper

Two words: Vine gar!

Hang a gladwrap bag filled with white vinegar in strategic places throughout your home, problem solved. Old trick I learnt living in Mozambique.

These kind of traps work really well if you want to attract 100s of flies.

Tried a few last summer and after a few weeks the bags were filled with 100s of dead, rotting flies. It only served to attract more.

More in the traps and more in the house

Yes true, the rotting flies will only tend to attract more flies.

We had bags hanging with small holes so they could enter and die, just needed frequent changing.

For repelling inside the home, we used to light citronella candles and have ample mint plants growing around the house.

Next to the bed, half a lemon with a clove inside. Ceiling or rotating fan on the go which repels Mozzies and Flies!
