I just got a new netbook. The dude who set it up for me installed Windows 7 on one partition and Ubuntu on another. In the process he's split my hard drive into two partitions.

Considering I'll be using Windows far more, I want to increase the size of the Windows partition, whilst reducing the size of the Ubuntu partition.

I know you can change the size of partitions under Disk Management in Windows 7, but when I right-click on the partition that Ubuntu is installed on no options other than "Delete Partition" are available. I am therefore unable to select "Shrink Partition" and resize as needed.

How exactly do I go about doing this without losing any data in the process?

Many thanks :)

Not sure about Windows 7 built in functionality, but I know PartitionMagic works wonders for these kinda jobs. You can probably download the trial version, and do your stuff before it expires. Else just get Jack Sparrow's version, by docking your ship at the appropriate bay...

Boot into Ubuntu, go to System -> Administration -> GParted.

That'll sort everything out for you.
Just make sure your partitions defragged before you do that... if GParted gives you an error and you haven't done that, defragging is the answer.

GParted will do the defragging FOR you... That's why it takes so long sometimes.

You'll need to use a live distribution to do it; if the partitions you want to resize are mounted, you're not going to be able to resize them.

Thanks mates, will try that now. From what I know the partitions I want to resize aren't mounted. Will give it a whiz now and let you know if there're any issues.

Paragon partition manager has never failed me, acronis is also good.
