Hi there!

I bought a 32" Full HD LCD TV today and everything works brilliantly with my XBOX and bluray player, but I notice when I plug the TV into my PC I cannot reach 1920x1080 resolution even though those resolutions are all over the box and specifications of the TV. Is it supposed to be like that? At the moment I have the resolution on 1360x768 and the movies look good, but somehow I feel it can go higher. The 2nd display on my OS reports it can go higher than 1360x768 but doesn't include the 1920x1080 resolution only others that don't work like 1600x1200.

I have my 22" LCD plugged into the graphics card via DVI and the TV is plugged in the other DVI of the graphics card with a DVI to VGA converter. Is this a problem perhaps?

Any help would be appreciated! :)

1) What TV did you buy?
2) Perhaps your display card can't give the higher resolutions (what card do you have in the PC)
3) Did you Extend or Clone your PC display between the 22" and the 32". If the 22" can't do 1920x1200 (with cloning) then the 32" will also get the 22"'s max resolution (hope it makes sense).

Good luck!

Also hope you "Creative Commons" content on the PC is 1080p (1920x1200) or else it is a waste to try and play that on the full HD screen from the PC.

PS - I bought the Samsung LA32C530 and it can play MKV files directly from the USB input ON THE TV - 100% so no need for a PC in the den anymore ;)

Using a GeForce GTX275 and I extended the display from my 22" as primary and the 32" TV as secondary. Going to try use a HDMI cable instead of VGA from the graphics card.

I am sure you are going to find that HDMI quality is far superior to your DVI. I have a quad core PC plugged into the 42" lounge TV, that has HDMI out on the video card, and an optical connection for the sound to my amp, a couple of XBox controllers for Windows, and the quality is on par of any consoles, and the games are half the price.

Just thought I'd point out that DVI and HDMI are interchangeable. Just because the cables look different mean nothing. They are the same tech. If your HDMI can do it, so can your DVI. In fact you can purchase convertor adaptors, which merely take from DVI to HDMI and vice versa.

If your TV is not reaching the res, it may be as result of the adapter in between your PC and TV, or your TV doesn't really support 1080p.

Jasweb is right.
This is definitely one of two things:

1. You need to "extend" your desktop and not "clone" it otherwise you're limited to the maximum resolution of the PC display.
2. Your graphics card does not support the resolution your TV is capable of reproducing.

You wont be able to "fix it" unless you use HDMI.
E.g., on my Sony Bravia, the user manual explicitly states that when using the "PC port", the max resolution that is allowed is 1360x768.

Why why why do they do that ?

Its already on extend and I'm using a GeForce GTX275, as I pointed out a few posts earlier :P

I used HDMI (DVI to HDMI converter on my graphics card) to my TV and it works fine now. Thanks for all the replies!

Which proves again that VGA sucks :-)

My old 2.8Ghz P4 with 1Gig RAM and a 256meg Geforce 6200 is capable of 1080P so your pc would easily handle it.

What is the max res the smaller unit has?

some GPU's cant cope with "mixed" res so what the do is scale both units to the capacity of the smaller unit.

Guys the problem lays on the TV not the PC, the TV's maximum resolution on the PC port is obviously limited.

Look through the manual and see which port should be used for PC. On my HD ready tv if you don't put the pc through the correct HDMI slot it will limit rez to 1280X768, where as the correct port has 1360x768.

Lol, did any of you guys actually read the thread?

It's sorted, he used the HDMI connector to the TV and the DVI converter for the GFX card. I think the problem is with the TV itself. Seems like it will only allow that setting if the feed is coming through the HDMI port.
