We like trying new restaurants, so if I come across one that I visited for the first time, I will post a recommendation here. Please feel free to do the same, so we get reviews on places from a first hand perspective :D

A while ago, I recommended Trishna Indian restaurant in Illovo to a poster on this board (forget who now). Brilliant food, if you like Indian, that is.

In May, I treated my bf to a massage at the Fairlawns Spa. We had lunch at the hotel restaurant afterwards. We had excellent service and good food too, but the price is a bit steep, considering the economic climate we all find ourselves in.

This past Friday, we went to Beach Blanket Bohemia in Sunninghill. Service was OK (waiter was not the most attentive type and we had to keep our own wine glasses topped up), but the food very good. Had risotto with mushroom and bacon. Yum.

Twas me. Good food, good service and good prices. Biriyani was fantastic!

Went to that new Blubird centre in Illovo on Saturday (is it named after you?)

Just got take away's from the Col'Cacchio but the vibe seemed nice, you could bar hop from the cocktail place to the restaurant then to the lounge for coffee after dinner.

Is that the new centre built right next to Thrupps?

Indian
In broadacres there is a small quaint little place called Banjaara's. Not flash but very cozy and their Lamb Gosh Badami is to die for!!!

Also another great curry restaurant in Bryanston in the Coachmans Crossing center just down from the City Lodge in peter place. Called 'Ghazal'.

Great curry, just do NOT order hot, these guys do not muck about.

Another superb curry house in Sandton Square, Bhukara, one of my favs for sure country wide.

You can tell you guys are in Joburg... here in Durbs you can get a brilliant Biriyani at virtually any Spar or take away!! If you can resist ordering a curry! :)

:):)

...the only proper 'restaurant' I've been to In Joberg was Moyo, which was really nice, but they've got one here in Durban now.

You have really added to the je ne sais quoi of this thread.

There is a distinct difference between what you would call a Durban curry and what I would call Indian cuisine ;)

Yeah but at least with ours they went to the effort of building a beach and a wavepool right outside it!! :)

Oh yeah yours is served on china, with silk napkins and they charge ten times as much.... and for good measure does not taste nearly as good! But each to their own! And do not for one second think we also don't get those "North" indian restaurants here in Durban.

But then again you can also go to your nearest Spar and buy a packet of spices to make your own Butter Chicken / Lamb Vindaloo / Lamb Rogan Josh for a tenth of the price!! ;)

EDIT : By the way Biriyani is far from being Haute Cuisine!!

Still, nothing beats traveling to the south of India, buying the spices at the source, flying back and cooking it in your own kitchen :D

Well we do have the largest Indian population outside of India, so for us a trip to India would be a waste... rather go and knock on your neighbours door and ask for some of the genuine stuff! :)

True. But in the Cape we save on airtickets and drive to Atlas Trading and get the same spices from probably the same source for a whole lot less bother.
Now if only I hadn't made the silly mistake of getting a water saving pressure regulated toilet cistern....

Dude, head off to the 'Sparks Road Cafe' for a roti or a bunny.
Its good 24/7 and is at its busiest in the wee hours of the morning.
burp.

I don't know how to put it nicely without offending anyone, but India and Durban is, well, chalk and cheese.

I agree. In Durbs we have (had) your ordinary variations on your typical curry, like the Rogan Josh, Vindaloo, madras, korma etc. In India however you get a ton of variation according to where exactly you are. Some solely use spice rubs, others use marinades, whilst in Durbs, getting hold of tamarind and fresh kaff i r lime leaves is a mission and dont even ask a Durbanite what galangal is. They are like chalk and cheese on the whole, however there are a few restaurants in Durbs who are truly Indian. I love Goan dishes myself but finding a true Goa chef can be tricky in Durbs - we eventually found one in the Edward hotel (IIRC) and it was one of he best nights ever. I hve also yet to see many Durbs Indian restaurants stuff thier naan breads or serve the traditional mango chutney, cucumber and coriander yoghurt dressing and chilli-garlic-ginger mix with their poppadums...
