Return to Monkey Island!

Ron Gilbert is not too happy with people taking stabs at his art design,

I have made one pixel art game in my entire career and that was Thimbleweed Park. Monkey Island 1 and 2 weren't pixel art games. They were games using state-of-the-art tech and art. Monkey Island 1 was 16 color EGA and we jumped at the chance to upgrade it to 256 colors. Monkey Island 2 featured the magical wizardry of scanned art by Peter Chan and Steve Purcell and we lusted to keep pushing everything forward.

If I had stayed and done Monkey Island 3 it wouldn't have looked like Monkey Island 2. We would have kept pushing forward, and Day of the Tentacle is a good example of that.

I never liked the art in DotT. Technically and artistically it was fantastic, but I never liked the wacky Chuck Jones style. But that was Dave and Tim's game, not mine. They can do what they want and I completely supported that.

Curse of Monkey Island also took a leap forward. It introduced us to a fully voiced and taller, lankier Guybrush with painted backgrounds that were all the rage in the late 90s. It was very much a game of its time.

When Dave and I first started brainstorming Return to Monkey Island we talked about pixel art, but it didn't feel right. We didn't want to make a retro game. You can't read an article about Thimbleweed Park without it being called a "throwback game". I didn't want Return to Monkey Island to be just a throwback game, I wanted to keep moving Monkey Island forward because it's interesting, fun, and exciting. It's what the Monkey Island games have always done.

I wanted the art in Return to Monkey Island to be provocative, shocking, and not what everyone was expecting. Rex is an amazing creative force and we have a team of incredible artists, animators, sound designers, programmers, and testers all pouring their souls into this game and it's beautiful to see, play, and listen to.

The music Michael, Peter, and Clint are doing is equally amazing. It's not AdLib, Sound Blaster, or even Roland MT-32 music. Its stunning, interactive, and recorded live.

Return to Monkey Island may not be the art style you wanted or were expecting but it's the art style I wanted.

When I started this game my biggest fear was Disney wouldn't let me make the game I wanted to make but they have been wonderful to work with.

It's ironic that the people who don't want me to make the game I want to make are some of the hard core Monkey Island fans. And that is what makes me sad about all the comments.

Return to Monkey Island is an incredible rollercoaster. Get on and have some fun or stomp out of the amusement park because it's not exactly the rollercoaster you wanted.

I hope you'll jump on with the rest of us.

I am curious what problem the Monkey Island cult have with the new Monkey Island? I like what I have seen, but I can see how a retcon could work some people up, but I have no issue with the art direction and style.

Unlike the Two Guys, Gilbert is making a game.

They went back to Andromeda, it takes time to come back.

To think I backed them. Their entire kickstarter is a schitshow because they allowed it to be. The memes are hilarious though.

Even Ken and Roberta are remaking Colossal Cave Adventure.

Can we get a new Hero's Quest or Kings Quest :-)

That would be good, I also won't mind a new Wilco Rogers adventure, but I think some themes will be challenged in today's time and would need to be revised

Leisure Suit Larry is unwelcomed, Police Quest is unwelcomed, and even King's Quest have its criticism. All which is drummed by the one Guy, Scott Murphy. Odd world.

Coming to old, but new games, a new Blade Runner game, which is rumoured, will be dope. Thinking back, Pepper's Adventure in Time was brilliant and could be well continued.

Games I really want to come back are Gabriel Knight and Broken Sword. For Lucas, a new Full-Throttle, a new The Dig, and a new Loom will great. I would love a new Discworld too. Sadly, games like these won't sell well, however, people could be more willing to look into these games with a gaming subscription.

To get back OT, I am totally buying Return to Monkey Island the day it is available.

Full throttle is good as it is, in a capsule for the mid ninties, though I did replay the remake twice, once on the PC and once on the Xbox, the soundtrack is just so 90s. The voice actor passed away sadly :-(.

Well said, so many cool games mentioned here.

I loved Simon the Sorcerer until it went 3D, but it was bad 3D, so much that the 3D mechanics diluted the adventure mechanics. The Star Trek adventure games were also real good.

Yes please! GK4 would probably never happen though. Jane Jensen has tried for many years.

Broken Sword 6 will definitely happen though. Think work has started on the game.

Also wouldn't mind a new game in the Longest Journey series.

We would need to wait and see what happens in the Blizzard-Activision acquisition, but I can't see MS go on a adventure game rebooting spree, rebooting being said in the sense of resurrecting the genre.

I hope so. I am curious who owns the rights to the Longest Journey?

In other news, Daedalic has been acquired by Nacon  I can only hope that new Daedalic titles will release without controversy.

I just want Quest for Glory VI, modern style but similar to the way QfG IV was.

I wasn't a fan of the direction they went with QfG V and that newish game that they released "Hero-U" was a huge disappointment.

Ragnar's Red Thread Games I think. The creator of TLJ never lost the rights to the series afaik. Dreamfall and Dreamfall Chapters were pretty good but TLJ was far better.

He's currently making the ultra woke social justice Dustborn though that looks terrible. Not my kinda thing.

That was badly received by some within the community, so much so that Ron Gilbert won't be posting about the game online anymore. I have seen some comments directed at him... some people are cray.

I can't believe that the art direction has some peoples panties in a knot.
Odd I saw that trailer on yt and thought it was good enough. Monkey island isnt a crytek tech demo...

I'm still not a fan of the art direction myself but still can't wait to play it.
