Hi, I got a problem erasing a DVD+RW disc. I used it with Nero 7 to write some files on it, it works fine and I can read the files but now I want to erase it. Every time I want to erase it with Nero it says it is not a rewritable disc. Seems Nero pics it up as a normal DVD+R. I have tried different programs like Alcohol 120% with the same result. Anybody know of a program that can force it to erase or format. I have tried to change the book type back to DVD+RW but can not as the utility also tells me this can only be done with a DVD+RW. The Disc is a HP DVD+RW and I am using a Liteon LH-20A1L. I have tried another HP DVD+RW disc that was new, when I inserted it it told me it was a rewritable disc but after writing to it I have the same problem. Any ideas.

Had the same problem many moons ago. I basically had to erase it on a mate's PC before being able to use it with my drive again.

It then happened again later on with another DVD-RW and a DVD-RAM disc. I had the drive swapped, no effect. After reloading XP due to a HDD failure, the same drive picked up both media types correctly and erased them. Never had the problem since!

Upgrade the firmware of your DVD writer... Usually fixes disc compatibility issues, like what you seem to be experiencing.

Mine happened recently after a MS Update - a real pain in the backside - I am using my server DVD drive to format my discs, writing is no problem, and it gives the same error whether a DVD-RW or CD-RW. I've tried to look for a fix, but none is forthcoming. I have even tried to uninstall and reinstall Nero 7, but get the same error - seems to me the only sure-fire way is to reformat and reinstall XP.

I wouldn't mess with a firmware update at all, as it's not related to to the error - if you really want to try, then be it on your head - maybe try and flash with the same firmware that's currently on the drive and see if it clears it, but I don't think so...

Add me to the problem list :(

I have had this problem with Nero 7 and my somewhat older LG DVD writer. First got it with Nero 7.0.0.0 and it didn't go away with Nero 7.7.5.1.

Funny enough, good old CloneCD will erase the dvd for me without a problem.

It's not my burner, as the erase function worked pretty well under Nero 6.
I can't re-install XP to test if that is the problem, as it's our family computer and has my dad's Pastel stuff on it.

Luckily it's not a major problem. I don't need to erase DVD's that often.

Tried this but it still does not work. CloneCD says it is erasing the disk but it doesn't. If I check the disk there is still a track on it with data and it still says it is a DVD-Rom not DVD+RW.

You can try and uninstall Nero 7 and use the Nero General Clean Tool for whatever version you are running - this will remove any and all traces of the installation - then reinstall from scratch and see what happens.

Actually - it seems you have Alcohol 120% installed. There's an option in there to make all discs appear as (CD/DVD)ROM disks. I think it's under the emulation option (Sorry, not at my home PC, so can't check the exact option name). It's probably this that's screwing you around. I know it buggered me around a couple of times. Just make sure you always have it switched off. ;)

No don't think it is that. I only installed Alcohol 120% after Nero didn't want to erase the disk to see if it might do it. Searched on the net and it seems like a common problem but can't find a fix for it.
