This is scarily coincidental. I had just read the article on how electricity prices should be increased by 75% to cut demand, although it would hurt the poor more, and was cyncially thinking that we'll end up with tiered electricity prices, but based on income rather than usage.

And then I go over to IOL, and see this:

What? They both receive the same value from the same product. Thats like saying that if you earn less, you should pay less for any product you purchase. You might as well have a communist society where we all receive the same.

Next you'll be paying a TV license fee according to the size of your TV screen... :D

Clearly you'll get much more value from their precious signal on a 52" screen than on a 31cm B&W TV. :)

I would rather pay on a usage basis. At the moment, TV watching on the SABC licence costs me around R1000 per hour, at a minimum.

**** you **** and **** **** ****!

Hmmm... pity about that I thought it was very expressive of how I feel.

Except... that almost makes sense

Wow, that's seriously messed up!

Why should the rich subsidize the utter rubbish they show on TV???

I don't think it's messed up - as some of the rich people are exploiting poor people, and think it's justified that the rich should be paying more than the poor.

Consider - you pay R100 on a salary of R1000 - that's 10% of your income.

Rich bugger pays R100 on his salary of R10000 - that's 1% of his income.

Conversely, if the rich bugger'll have to pay 10%, he'll be paying R1000.

Should it be set according to a sliding scale, poor bloke will pay R10 (1%) of his salary, whilst rich bugger will pay R100 (also 1%) of his.

Besides, it will be justified forcing the fat and lazy cats to pay for something they won't use :D seeing the mess the country's in at the moment

But, in all fairness, it must NOT be a forced or compulsory deduction.

Every time you open your eyes there is some other f***wit dreaming up some new harebrained scheme. It's a wonder the Cabinet haven't co-opted this Jane Duncan twit.

I will get rid of all my TV's if they even consider implementing a daft scheme like this.

And you will find most average people will do the same. and in the end they'll get less revenue from tv licenses.

Huh? I get that one person is paying a bigger percentage of his salary - but that's just how it works! Why should a TV licence depend on income, whereas, say, bread, doesn't?

If everything's charged according to a sliding scale, all salaries will effectively be equal - you earn 3x more, but everything costs you 3x more as well.

I'm hoping I'm just missing the sarcasm in your post...

I say abandon the TV license fee. The govt is just making one pay for one's daily dose of propaganda anyway.

I am certain T_L is drunk.

Must be the funny maroelas berries I've had recently :o

:D

But should they implement such a scheme, I am sure most people will just throw their tellies out, and get a DVD player thingy with large flat screen on which you don't need to pay a licence :)

Besides, how sure are they that the poor in the townships are actually paying their telly licences? By now all the stolen telly sets should be evenly redistributed amongst them (and let me hasten to add, extremely tongue in cheek warning! :p) and none's paying licence fees :D

Think it's just another sneaky underhanded move by the SABC to create a large revenue stream for itself

I stopped paying my license fee. I watch adverts during the shows, they pay for the costs of the station. ;)
