RIM could split phone making division, messaging network

You have to open the conversation before it sends the read receipt.

So you could open it and leave the phone on the table and go to the bathroom for example. See what I mean?

But why? Why would you open it, not read the 5 words sent to you, and then put it down? The point is, BBM's read receipt normally indicates that it was read. Whatsapp has no such functionality.

You could read the first one, send a reply and then not see the other message coming afterwards. Kind of getting off topic here but the point is still, unless the app asks the user if they've read it, it's still just assuming. Just maybe assuming in a better way than whatsapp

IIRC, if the conversation is open, but the phone is in its pouch or the light went out, i.e. not being used, it will also not show as read.

If I'm sending a message to someone via WhatsApp and they go online seconds after I've sent it I can assume that they have read it. If I send a message at 10:23 and the last activity or "last seen" notification shows them online at 10:24 I can assume that they have read me message.

At the end of the day it's all just assumptions. WhatsApp doesn't have read notification which is the only problem I have with it. My only problem with BBM is that you have to have a Blackberry......

I wouldn't say its years ahead but if I have a Contact on BBM and What's APP then I always default to BBM.

Ok...well...lets just leave it as a personal preference..but to say that BBM is ahead of WhatsApp...well...with that I cant agree with as WhatsApp does everything now that BBM does except for the read receipts. Can now also upload a profile pic that updates on your friends phones aswell. Groups works 100% too.

Just curious....why people still have the obsession with BBM? WhatsApp now does everything BBM can do...except maybe for the read report.

We have had this debate before.... there is no comparison.

Its like trying to compare encrypted email with people comunicating using morse code.

I prefer Whatsapp not having a "read" message.

I don't want people to know when I read their message and then they expect you to reply within 1 min.

As long as the message has been sent and received by their phone, then I am happy.

No, you are wrong about whatsapp. The first tick means it was delivered to the server, the second tick means it was delivered to the phone. There is no way to know whether the message had been read or not.

I have loads of messages with double ticks that have never been read by the recipient.

The second tick means that the message has been passed on to their account... it might have been sent to the phone.

As far as I know...double tick it has actually been delivered to the phone..not just the account. I have tested this with my sister's phone. Kept her phone off...sent message...no second tick. Switched her phone on...soon as it booted and the message notification came through, double tick appeard on my phone.

lol....ok...if you say so. Guess the berry addicts will remain just that...addicts. :p

BBM feels smoother and faster than Whatsapp. And, as I've said, more stable.

It's a good system, but it's still not BBM.

It's true though, BBM is perhaps the sole reason blackberries are still selling today. Whatsapp is almost a carbon copy of BBM (you even argued that whatsapp can do everything BBM can).

Everytime I see someone with whatsapp, you know "that guy wished he had BBM, but didnt want a blackberry".

The problem is that if there is an error with the app (like its out of date) then the app returns a success even though the person never gets it.... also there are issues when you move phones and keep the same number.

The only time I have had issues with delivery was on the BBD (Blackberry Blackout day)... I have issues with whatsapp more often then not.

What about profile pics? I haven't seen one profile pic in What's App but everyone on BBM has one.

BBM also ties in with Facebook.
