RIM could split phone making division, messaging network

I would not mind seeing Google buying the network side of things and opening up BIS to to Android phones. Only thing I do not want to see is BIS becomming a mandatory service for a Android device to function. It should be optional.

I also would not mind seeing Google taking a stake in WhatsApp. Dont have to do a complete take over...but purchase like a 40% share or something to give these guys a lekker financial boost (lets admit it...they deserve it) and then integrating WhatsApp into Android as a standard service.

Interesting. BES is what makes BB so powerful in the corporate/government environment so would be a good move for the company as a whole.

Just curious....why people still have the obsession with BBM? WhatsApp now does everything BBM can do...except maybe for the read report.

BBM is also a lot more stable than WhatsApp. Sometimes WhatsApp just doesn't deliver certain messages.

I think this is a misconception. BES is over kill for 90% of companies as Activesync does what most companies want out of the box. We can all install and configure BES servers but I have yet to meet someone in the industry who is really clued up on BES.

I have never had this problem. Only times I have noticed a delay in WhatsApp messages if if I send a message to someone that is using a Iphone. It can have a large delay sometimes...not sure why. WhatsApp messages to other Android or Blackberry devices gets delivered almost instantly.

Also a lot of my friends only use BBM. The BBM groups are used for everything from planning kids parties to planning weekends away.

An alternative option would be to keep the company together but sell a stake to a larger technology firm such as Microsoft, the newspaper said.

That is more likely considering that RIM has so far refused to support devices that are not Blackberry, this might have made sense a long time ago but it is coming back to bite RIM. RIM could conceivably whip up a few BBM apps to run on non-Blackberry devices but it would take time for such apps to gain traction.

I would not be surprised if Microsoft, Nokia and RIM join forces to the point where BBM runs on new Nokias, with Microsoft being the "Rattenfänger von Hameln".

Whatsapp does have read reports, those 2 little green ticks. First one means it's delivered, second one means it's been read.

Wrong, first tick means it has hit the server, 2nd tick means it has hit the phone. Definetally does not mean READ.

No, you are wrong about whatsapp. The first tick means it was delivered to the server, the second tick means it was delivered to the phone. There is no way to know whether the message had been read or not.

Clock Face - message waiting to be sent
1st tick - sent
2nd tick - delivered to recipient

You are the weakest link.....good bye. :p

Well yes "delivered to phone" implies read. The only way to know for sure if it's been read would be to ask the other person to confirm, like Outlook does with an email.

Wrong again I've tested this and with BBM if it's show read it really means the user has seen the message.

Really? Do Blackberries have some mind-reading feature I haven't heard of?
