RIM could split phone making division, messaging network

I guess i'm just old fasioned for using googletalk. I really dont see the allure of bbm or whatsapp.

The problem is that if there is an error with the app (like its out of date) then the app returns a success even though the person never gets it.... also there are issues when you move phones and keep the same number.

The only time I have had issues with delivery was on the BBD (Blackberry Blackout day)... I have issues with whatsapp more often then not.

Jeeezz...sounds like you have really bad luck with WhatsApp...cause I have not had any of those issues. Nor have I had issues when switching phones...and I have done it 3 times. From Blackberry to Moto Defy and then from Defy to RAZR...everytime was just a question of registering my number on the new phone and ta da. Ready to go in 10 seconds.

What about profile pics? I haven't seen one profile pic in What's App but everyone on BBM has one.

BBM also ties in with Facebook.

The profile pics is a new feature that recently got included. You have to make sure you have the latest version. I dont think many people know about it yet. I also only have two people in my WhatsApp that have uploaded profile pics.

I think this is a misconception. BES is over kill for 90% of companies as Activesync does what most companies want out of the box. We can all install and configure BES servers but I have yet to meet someone in the industry who is really clued up on BES.

Nope, we use it quite extensively: mail, integrated transparent vpn for internal sites, enterprise app only communicating internally and a number of policies.

It can be overkill in scenarios but if you need the control or functionality it does it better than others.

I dont see how BBM is any better than whatsapp. Ive used both and they both the same friggin thing!

everyone I know is all on whatsapp, BB users including coz they know they are a dying breed so they wanna be in on the action!!!

They can keep their crappy BBM, but BIS would be awesome though.

The #1 reason why BBM fails? BBM pins, and the knobs who keep losing them. I prefer something that integrates directly into my phone book, even if it doesn't have things that give teenagers wet dreams, like profile pics :erm:

Ditto. That's why I like iMessage. Text someone - if they don't have an iphone it's SMS, otherwise goes automatically as iMessage.

This!

Imagine Samsung buys the messaging side of things. Integrate the BIS service (interwebz + messaging reliability) with ChatOn (Sammy's inhouse chat app). Now THAT would be awesome. I think that would absolutely make a KILLER combo.

One thing I noticed when BB users slam Whatsapp is they compare BBM and Whatsapp ON THE BB. Whatsapp ON a BB sux and does not compare to BBM.

Both my daughter's and my wife were BB addicts. We had this argument often. Also with peeps at work.
One day my wife used my Whatsapp on my GS2 and nearly fell off the chair. NOW SHE UNDERSTOOD what I meant. My wife now has a GS2.

One of my daughter's bust her BB, so I lent here my old Desire HD. She had a freak about no BBM. 2 weeks and BB is repaired. BB lays in a drawer now. Told her BB mates to install Whatsapp if they want to chat.

I am seeing the above happening a lot.

This makes a lot of sense. I predict their phone business to die a quick death like their tablet business.

They will make a bit of money selling off the device business. Lots of patents etc

A if the company who purchases the business is clever they will keep two models... a high end and an entry level. Then pop on a good OS... and bob's your uncle.

There could also be a bit of a fight over the hardware business... who needs patents from whom will play a big part.

I know what you mean... they haven't done a lot to convince BB owners to move over to whatsapp. I have seen it work on the iphone and S2 and its way better.

The thing is I have also seen a few people say the opposite, they have the iPhone/droid and miss bbm.
The experience varies but there are a LOT of people who would go for BBM + BIS on another device.

WhatsApp messages to other Android or Blackberry devices gets delivered almost instantly.

I've BBM'd people and it's taken 5 minutes on average per message to deliver.

As I'm one of those that doesn't type everything in a single message and prefer multiple, the message makes no sense and I need to phone anywhere. I used to love BBM with near instant deliveries, but it's degraded to the extend that I'm counting my time to leave BIS (50 days)
