RIP Dion Wired

Massmart Holdings Ltd. started consulting with unions about store closures and jobs cuts, as the South African unit of Walmart Inc. battles to recover from an earnings slump.

The plan is to shutter the 23-store Dion-Wired chain of hi-tech appliance shops and 11 Masscash wholesale outlets, a spokesman said by phone on Monday. Employees and the South African Commercial, Catering and Allied Workers Union have been informed and the process may take at least two months, he said.

Man, I had a feeling this might happen. I was at Dion Wired on the morning of Black Friday and the store was not even busy. Walked in and out within 10 mins. Right then I knew something was up.

The move marks the first significant act by Massmart’s new chief executive officer, Mitchell Slape, who arrived from Wal-Mart in September with a brief to turn around the retailer.

He sure came in with a bang :sneaky:

Its no real surprise that the brand of Dion Wired is moving on... I'm surprised its happening in such a cut and dried fashion though, i expected a slow death as individual stores closed...

Same, lets hope for some good going out of business sales though...

Very much doubt that actually..

Given that Game and Dion Wired live under the same BU, I would expect most of the stock to be shifted into Games inventory.

It didn't help that their staff was clueless, and their websites are a disaster. The less said about their delivery the better.

So will there be a liquidation sale or something?
