Kulula cannot be rescued

Kulula has been unable to raise the funding required for the company to continue with its operations, and as a result, it is beyond rescue.

"Regrettably, the requisite funding could not be raised in order for the company to continue with its operations," the company said in a statement.

It just astonished me how you could not run Comair successfully with brands such as British Airways and Kulula and demand in the market?

You had one of the most modern fleets in the market even. Something that 1time did not have.

Yes, but the trough was bigger. More to scoop for the cadres.
 
Kulula and BA were great till around 2018 then a few issues started popping up and flight were often delayed. They also had the maintenance and safety issues and after Covid I think most airlines are hanging by a thread. Sad but as Richard Branson said If you want to be a Millionaire, start with a billion dollars and launch a new airline.

But recently they did have something that 1Time had: the same CEO.
Jokes aside, your points make sense. In theory they had what they needed to continue to be a success, but you can’t disrespect your customers by being chronically late and unreliable for years and years while your biggest and hungriest competitor is laser-focussed on predictable on-time performance which makes for a seamless travel experience.
Not that I am the most prolific domestic traveller in SA but for many years now I have chosen to pay slightly more to avoid Kulula in particular (and BA generally) unless it was unavoidable. The last time I flew Kulula was in March out of necessity when they were grounded (which they handled appallingly) and I’m still waiting for that refund…

Couple of things:
1) SA airline industry is viciously unfair against private operators with the SAA turd being able to operate on taxpayer money.
2) Their "modern" fleet principle was one of the reasons why they tanked.
While the pandemic decimated its business, its debt burden has been growing for years, partly as a result of a disastrous order of Boeing 737 Max planes.

It paid $45 million in deposits for eight of the planes. It already had one delivered when a worldwide grounding of the planes was declared between March 2019 and December 2020 following two fatal crashes.
Comair's legal battle in a US court to cancel the purchase agreement of the 737 Max planes from US manufacturer Boeing is still ongoing.
And to be fair, that really wasn't their fault either.
 
Great, so Safair, Lift are going to be able to screw customers even more. The prices are just insane.

Yup, did some price checks yesterday. I am flying to Durban at the end of August and just the flight up there is more than my return ticket was with Kulula. Cheapest Flysafair ticket was R2,400 while SAA came in at R2,900.
