RIP Louis Luyt

I do not follow rugby.

Was he not a much maligned figure ?

Some see him as being responsible for keeping the sport of Rugby segregated... or at least favouring white players.
His political party was on the Right of the political spectrum.

Sad if anyone dies, but I feel that this is not a big loss to SA. Power hungry old south africa mentality type dude.

When Louis Luyt was in charge of the old Transvaal Rugby Union it was a model of professionalism and a leading light in the marketing of rugby. Now the Golden Lions Rugby Union is on the verge on bankruptcy and is the laughing stock of SA rugby.

Former South African Rugby Union president and politician Louis Luyt has died.

Luyt was reportedly admitted to Durban hospital where he died this morning.

He was 80 years old.

Golden Lions Rugby Union (GLRU) issued a statement saying that it was “with great sadness” that the union had learnt of the passing of the former Lions boss, “one of South Africa’s most iconic rugby figures”.

“I would like to convey my deepest sympathies to Doc Luyt’s dear wife and children on behalf of myself and the Golden Lions Rugby Union,” GLRU president Kevin de Klerk said.

“This union was always regarded as his home in rugby and we are saddened by the news of his passing.”

“He was always a great mentor, for most of us involved in the game, and we always strove to attain the very high standards that he set. I will sorely miss him,” De Klerk said. - IOL

Wtf 80?

I saw him quite a few times a couple of years ago at Luyt Brewery (there was a pub inside the brewery) he looked pretty healthy and nowhere near 80.

So back in '94 he was 61. Wow time flies.

Louis Luyt was a formidable man. He believed in black and white and no greys. He took a little rugby union and in a few years made it the envy of SA rugby. When he left Ellispark had been paid in full and the Lions had a healthy cash flow and had won the Currie Cup. Sadly he had a very strong personality which many ppl including politicians did not like. But he was a self made man. Both respected and hated.

His younger brother (Ricky) passed away last year.

I kno the Luyt family rather well and they are in my prayers.

Louis Luyt would be missed by friend and foe.

Rest in Peace!

He was a great rugby man and made the Lions a successful union. Lots of people hated him but he took no nonsense from anybody. He stood up for what he believed was right. Rest in Peace Dr Luyt !
