2025 Rivian R1S And R1T Facelift Revealed: Specs, Details And Everything Else You Need To Know

Streamlined manufacturing, improved powertrains, fancier interiors and more powerful technology are all welcome updates for the Gen 2 R1 family.

2025 Rivian R1T And R1S Are Faster, Smarter And Even More Fun

The “Gen 2” versions of Rivian’s R1 family might look the same on the outside, but they’re vastly overhauled under the skin.

Rivian refreshes the R1S and R1T with more power, performance, and range

Rivian's much-anticipated refresh for the R1S and R1T is finally here. The company calls the new models "second generation", as they have allegedly been "completely reengineered through hundreds of hardware improvements, performance upgrades, a fully redesigned software experience, and evolved in-house drive systems".

The iconic exterior design stays the same, but the quad-motor R1T now develops 1,025 hp and 1,624 Nm torque to achieve a 0 to 97 km/h time of just 2.5 seconds.

New Large and Max battery packs come with redesigned modules and efficient packaging allowing for a maximum range of 676 km. The entry-level Standard pack has an EPA-estimated 435 km of range instead.

Rivian says the drag coefficient is as low as 0.297, although it doesn't specify for which model. New 22" tires help reduce drag, and there's also a redesigned heat pump-based thermal system that improves rider temperature comfort and saves energy.

These are built upon an entirely new electrical architecture and compute platform, which let the company remove 2.6 km of wiring from each vehicle. The new in-house developed Rivian Autonomy Platform makes its debut with 11 cameras, 5 radars, and "AI prediction technology". This has 360-degree visibility and 8 times the camera megapixels from previous vehicles, as well as redundant sensors that let it see "far into the distance even in poor weather and light conditions".

Rivian R2 will reportedly have its charging port at the rear on the driver's side

Rivian unveiled the R2 in March, and people seem to love it, given how many reservations the company has received for the model. The R2 is now rumored to have switched the location of its charging port.

According to a user on Rivian's forum, at the Rivian Space in Pasadena one of the company's VPs confirmed that the charging port on production models will be at the rear on the driver's side.

This is a pretty big change, considering that when the car was announced Rivian was adamant that the position at the rear on the passenger's side was very intentionally chosen in order to make charging at street chargers easy (this apparently is a thing in Europe where the R2 will also be sold).

No, the Rivian factory didn’t catch on fire – this is what happened - electrek

A fire broke out at Rivian‘s Normal, Illinois, factory last night, but the factory itself was unharmed. Here’s what we know.

A fire damaged a number of EVs in the Rivian factory parking lot. It spread to an as yet unidentified number of Rivian EVs. The vehicles were severely burned, as shown in videos shared on social media.

Central Illinois news channel WAND reported that Normal Fire Department spokesperson Matt Swaney said “fire crews were called to Rivian’s Normal plant just before 9:45 p.m. for a reported vehicle fire” on the north side of the factory.

As of midnight Sunday, Swaney confirmed that the fire was out by midnight, and that the fire’s cause is under investigation. There were no reported injuries.

Photos taken and posted on the RIVIAN Electric Vehicles discussion Facebook page by Jack Hanson show an aerial view of the plant, and the damaged EVs are boxed off. My rough estimate shows around 60-ish burned EVs:

Rivian just last week got approval to expand the Normal factory to produce its R2 SUV.

Refreshed Rivian R1S gets top safety rating from IIHS

Large SUVs aren't necessarily the safest vehicles on the road, but the 2025 Rivian R1S is bucking the trend. The American IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) awarded the R1S with its Top Safety Pick+ rating after the latest crash testing session. The Pick+ is the highest possible award for any production vehicle.

The 2025 model walked away with "Good" ratings in every category, apart from headlights. Those fancy items that Rivian is known for have only been given an "Acceptable" rating by IIHS. Looking at the results of the previous model, which was given a Top Safety Pick rating (without the "+"), we can clearly see there's been quite a lot of progress. The 2022 R1S had only a "Moderate" rating for the overlap crash test and a "Poor" rating for seat belt reminders. Interestingly - the old headlights were rated as "Good."

During the moderate overlap front test crash, the 2025 R1S performed pretty well. The exception was the driver's leg protection, where the R1S was deemed "Adequate," while the rest of the test results were given a "Good" rating. It seems the changes made by Rivian have paid off.
