Rivian R3 “has the soul of a rally car”, says CEO

RJ Scaringe sees his new R3 hatchback as a rally stage refugee, plus his plan to sell “millions”

Rivian’s big reveal event in Laguna Beach last week was supposed to be all about the Tesla Model Y-sized R2… instead it was the surprise debut of smaller models based on the same platform – R3 and R3X – that stole the show. By mashing together hatchback, SUV, retro and futuristic vibes R3 previews a production model due around 2027 that will cost from $35,000 to $40,000 and could be just the ticket for exploding Rivian sales beyond just the US.

Why? Because the R3’s compact proportions and hybrid hatch/crossover styling are right in the slot for Euro-tastes. The fact there are echoes of early VW Golfs, a pinch of Lancia Delta, and some Lada Niva in the silhouette doesn’t hurt either.

“It's like a crossover meets an SUV, meets a hatch, meets a wagon, meets a bunch of things. We say it has the soul of a rally car,” boss RJ Scaringe explains. “We got to have a little bit of fun with R3X (pictured above) where it's a tri-motor, it's insane performance, there’s torque vectoring. It allows us to take the performance element of the brand and apply it in a meaningful way.”

In person it plays tricks on your eyes – diddy from a distance, actually a fairly substantial crossover up close with back seats for adults, a big boot and a handy split tailgate. Think Hyundai Ioniq 5 N size, another large-ish crossover that’s shaped like something smaller.

Rivian R3 pricing revealed, European sales plans confirmed

Rivian shocked the world last week when everyone was expecting it to unveil the R2, and it did that, but also had a "one more thing" moment presenting the even smaller and cheaper R3. Not too many details were released about the R3 at the time, but now Rivian CEO RJ Scaringe has revealed a bit more info to Top Gear.

And most importantly, the price range. Rivian wants the R3 to cost between $35,000 to $40,000. For reference, the R2's starting price is $45,000, so the R3 neatly slots below its bigger sibling.

"It's like a crossover meets an SUV, meets a hatch, meets a wagon, meets a bunch of things. We say it has the soul of a rally car", Scaringe says about the R3. What about the R3X? "We got to have a little bit of fun with R3X where it's a tri-motor, it's insane performance, there’s torque vectoring. It allows us to take the performance element of the brand and apply it in a meaningful way".

The R3 is due to begin production in 2027 though, and a lot can change in three years. Before that, the R2 should propel Rivian from an ultra niche player in the EV space to mass market adoption - or at least, that's what the company is hoping. The R2's first deliveries are scheduled for 2026.

Rivian owners can now access Tesla's Superchargers in North America

As all of its competitors eventually did, Rivian announced back in June of last year that it made a deal with Tesla to adopt the NACS charging port for its future cars sold in North America, and - also like all of its competitors in the US - that meant Rivian owners would get access to Tesla's 15,000-strong Supercharger network across North America.

This is now live. If you have a Rivian R1S or R1T, you can now charge at any Supercharger in North America. You will, of course, need an adapter. Rivian will ship these to owners of its cars starting in April.

Rivian secures government incentives for Illinois expansion

Electric vehicle startup Rivian is ready to expand its Illinois operations after securing a massive €771 million incentive package from the state. The planned expansion means the company could accelerate the rollout of its highly anticipated R2 SUV. The news has sparked a surge in Rivian's stock price, with investors excited about the automaker's plans.

Rivian's Normal, Illinois facility, purchased from Mitsubishi in 2017, is where the magic happens. It's currently home to the popular R1T pickup truck and R1S SUV production. The expanded plant will also be the birthplace of the R2, a smaller and more affordable SUV set to compete with Tesla's Model Y. Unveiled in March, the R2 is preparing for debut in the first half of 2026.
